KJM4550 – General Polymer Chemistry

Course content

The course provides the students with basic concepts in polymer chemistry. Particular emphasis is placed on polymerization reactions-mechanisms and kinetics and methods for molecular characterization of polymers. In addition, statistical treatment of flexible chain molecules, thermodynamics and rheology of polymer systems are discussed.

Learning outcome

On successful completion of this course:

  • you will have a broad knowledge of the principles and concepts of contemporary polymer chemistry.
  • you can discuss and define the basic concepts of polymer synthesis.
  • you can elucidate the basic reactions in polymer chemistry.
  • you can describe the physical properties of different polymers.
  • you can describe the different experimental techniques used in the characterization of polymer solutions.
  • you can describe theoretical models used to describe polymer solutions.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

If you are not already enrolled as a student at UiO, please see our information about admission requirements and procedures.

Overlapping courses

The course overlaps 9 credits against KJ 224.

Teaching

Lectures (34 hours), Seminars (20 hours), and a compulsory laboratory course of 40 hours (5 exercises). Pass in the laboratory course is a prerequisite for taking part in the final examination.

The first lecture and the first laboratory course are mandatory. If you fail to meet and do not informe the Departments office (phone nr. 22 85 54 46) prior to the lecture/lab, you will loose your admission to the entire course.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Written examination (4 hours).

This subject offers new examination in the beginning of the subsequent term for candidates who withdraw during an ordinary examination or fail an ordinary examination. For general information about new examination, see /studier/admin/eksamen/sykdom-utsatt/mn/index.html and http://www.matnat.uio.no/english/studies/examination/repeat.html
