Most of the course will be based on the book A Concise Introduction to Numerical Analysis by A. C. Faul, published by Chapman and Hall.

Supporting literature

As supporting literature I can recommend An Introduction to Numerical Analysis by Süli and Mayers. It overlaps mostly with our curriculum. For numerical linear algebra I have heard good things about Numerical Linear Algebra by Trefethen and Bau.

Curriculum

This is the final curriculum:

  • Chapter 1: Everything. (Sections 1.1–1.5 is repetition from MAT-INF1100, so please consult your notes from that course.)
  • Chapter 2: Sections 1–10.
  • Chapter 3: Sections 1–8. Sections 7–8 can be replaced by these notes.
  • Chapter 4: Sections 1–2 and 7
  • Chapter 5: Everything. For the Monte Carlo method (Section 5.8) we will use these notes.
  • Chapter 6: Sections 1, 4, 8. Everything can be replaced by Sections 1–4 in these notes.
  • This note on optimization methods: Only Sections 1, 2, 3.1, 3.2, as well as Theorem 6 in Section 3.3.
