We have now finished the grading and turned in the lists, but it may take some time before the results appear in the computer system.

Here is today's exam (corrected) with solutions.

Published Nov. 30, 2022 7:58 AM

We meet in Room 1119 on the 11th floor. We have it booked, but if anyone else claims it out of old habit, we have the possibility to retreat to the usual room U32.

The Formula Sheet will be part of the exam papers (hence you need not bring it). Take a good look at it before the exam so that you know what is included and what is not. The sheet differs a little from year to year, and this year's version is not identical to last year's.

I hope to finish the semester by covering 9.28-9.31 plus 9.37 on Monday, November 21st (perhaps I need to use some of Wednesday 23rd), and then continuing by reviewing the syllabus in a systematic manner. Remember the extra lectures (not on the schedule) on November 28th and 30th. They will both be in room 1119 of NHA (on the eleventh floor across from the room we have usually been in). The times are the usual: Monday 12.15-14 and Wednesday 14.15-16.

I have finished grading the mandatory assignment (everybody passed with flying colors) and a suggested solution is available here.

I have made two corrections in the mandatory assignment. In the first displayed formula in Problem 3b) there was a factor X too much on the left hand side of the inequality, and in Problem 3d) the formula for the variance of Y was wrong (I had forgotten to subtract the expectation).

The mandatory assignment is available here. It can be solved using the material covered up to Monday, September 26th (i.e. up to and including Section 4.1).

I have made a short list of misprints in the textbook.

The textbook is John B. Walsh: Knowing the Odds: An Introduction to Probability Theory, American Mathematical Society, 2012, ISBN: 978-0-8218-8532-1.

Tentative syllabus (we haven't quite managed all of this the previous years, and may have to take some shortcuts towards the end):

Ch. 2.1-2.6

Ch. 3.1-3.4

Ch: 4

Ch. 5.1, 5.4-5.6
