As a preparation to the first part of the course, the students are encouraged to recapitulate the main themes of Chapters 6, 7, 10 and 11 in the course book for STK1000; see here for details (or the similar material in another introductory book in statistics).

Please deliver the compulsory assignment in the BOX for assignments outside the reception on the 7th floor, and not inside the reception. The box is located around the corner, to the left when you stand in front of the reception.

The general rules for compulsory assignments can be read here (in Norwegian).

As announced earlier, the project exam will be handed out Tuesday April 30th, and the deadline for handing in the solution will be Tuesday May 14th. Most of the exam will be equal for STK4900 and STK9900, but the STK9900 students will have to do one more exercise. You can have a look at the project exam from 2012 here . The data sets are available here, if you want to exercise. Please note that you are not allowed to collaborate with others on this project, as it counts 50% of your exam.

The project exam is now available. How to read the data files into R is explained here. Send an email to glad@math.uio.no if you have problems with the files. To be handed in Tuesday May 14th. Good luck!

Some students have asked me to suggest R books for further reading. For those who want a simple introduction to R, I can recommend Peter Dalgaard: Introductory Statistics with R, see http://staff.pubhealth.ku.dk/~pd/ISwR.html for details.

For those who are specially interested in more advanced use of R, beyond the content of this course, there are several possibilities. This page has collected documents/books freely available on the net  http://cran.r-project.org/other-docs.html . Check for example Kuhnert and Venables on this list.

I remind all students that, as announced on this page earlier, the project exam will be made available on this web page on Tuesday April 30th. Your solution to the project exam must be handed in before 14.30 on Tuesday May 14th. You have to hand in two copies, and deliver them in the reception on the 7th floor in Niels Henrik Abels hus. Instructions on how to organize your report will be given in the project exam text. Three problems will be in common for both STK4900 students and STK9900 students, while STK9900 students will have to do one problem in addition, as in last year's project exam.

Our two student representatives are Andreas (andreas.smebye at gmail.com) and Ingvild (i.k.midtervoll at odont.uio.no). Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will arrange a brief course evaluation in one of the breaks. Andreas and Ingvild will go through the responses together with Ingrid and write a short summary.

The exercises will be, as in week 9, at 13.15, so that you have a lunch break after the lectures. On Friday, the lectures will be shorter, and the exercises are moved to 12.15, hence we finish one hour before usual.

Same as week 9: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday group A starts with the practical exercises, while group B starts with the theoretical exercises. Then at 14.30 we switch.

Tuesday and Thursday we do it the other way around, so that group B starts with the practical exercises and group A starts with the theoretical exercises.

The exercise classes start each day at 13.15 (not 12.15), so there is one hour for lunch and relax. You will be divided into two groups. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday group A starts with the practical exercises, while group B starts with the theoretical exercises. Then at 14.30 we switch.

Tuesday and Thursday we do it the other way around, so that group B starts with the practical exercises and group A starts with the theoretical exercises.

The computer lab has 16 computers. You can work together in pairs, but it can also be useful if some of you bring a portable computer. You have to download R, which is free. The lab assistants can help you with this.
