MEK9530 – Stability and Buckling of Structures

Course content

Basic principles for stability and buckling. Second order load effects. Potential energy. Buckling of structures with compression members (columns, frames) using differential equations and energy principles. Critical loading. Iterative solutions (Vianello). Matrix formulation. Stiffness matrix with stability functions. Approximate solution methods. Inelastic buckling. Aspects of large displacement theory.

Learning outcome

The course gives a thorough treatment of the theoretical basis for computation of systems where geometric nonlinearity (second order load effects), caused by the effect of axial force on the displacements, must be accounted for. Emphasis is placed on providing a good physical understanding of buckling and second order load effects in general.

Admission

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

Teaching

3 hours of lectures per week.

Examination

Three compulsory assignments need to be passed within given deadlines to be allowed to take the final exam and a prosject which counts 20 % of the final grade.

Doctoral candidates must deliver one extra obligatory exercise, which must be at an advanced level within the curriculum of the course, or be a theoretical extension of the curriculum of the course, and should preferrably relate the contents of the course to newer research literature. It may be required to give an oral presentation and/or deliver a written report. The exercise must be passed to be allowed to take the ?nal exam.

Depeding on the number of students, the exam will be either oral or written.
What form the exam will take will be announced by the teaching staff within October 15th for the autumn semester and March 15th for the spring semester.

Language of examination

Subjects taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English.

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in deferred examinations. Deferred examinations are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in deferred examinations.

Students who have failed an exam, who withdraw during an exam, and students who wish to retake an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in deferred exams, but may retake the exam when it is regularly scheduled.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
