HME4102 – Qualitative methods

Course content

  • Research based on documentary and other historical sources. Comparative historical research.
  • Case studies, using documentary information, observational data – including video documentation, and interview data
  • Anthropological/ethnographic research methods
  • Action research
  • The art of writing a qualitative thesis

Learning outcome

The course is designed to provide an understanding of qualitative research issues and to develop skills in qualitative research methods that can be used in masters’ and doctoral theses. The course aims at making the student familiar with research based on documentary and other historical sources, on case studies, various types of observational and participatory techniques, interview techniques, field work, analysis and interpretation of documentary and related information.
