INTHE4012 ¨C International Health, Master Thesis

Course content

During your M.Phil in the International Community Health programme, you will be required to develop an independent scientific work culminating into a master thesis. ?You will have an opportunity to demonstrate your scientific independence through the conduct of a scientific research that is relevant for improving global community health. Through a step-by-step process, you have developed a protocol for your thesis and acquired ethical and regulatory approvals during your second semester. In this course you will conduct fieldwork based on your protocol during your third semester and complete data analysis and writing of your final thesis during the fourth semester.?

Learning outcome

At the end of the course, you will be able:

Knowledge:

• To demonstrate how to search and use different sources of scientific literatures to identify research gaps relevant in global community health.
• To outline the choice and describe the methodological approaches relevant to address research questions set forth in the thesis protocol.
• To explain theoretical frameworks of relevance in global community health research and how they are used in the conceptualization and interpretation of own scientific work.
• To demonstrate ? ability for good scientific writing and translate scientific results to inform community health interventions?

Skills:

• To appraise scientific literature in global community health to compare and interpret own research findings.
• To develop a scientific protocol that is original and of ethical standard.
• To reflect on theoretical frameworks and apply key methodological approaches in the collection, collation, and analysis of research data.
• To compile an independent scientific report in a professional and an ethically sound manner.
• To demonstrate ability to disseminate and discuss research results to colleagues and scientific community.?

General competence:

• To appreciate various ethical consideration and challenges that may arise during research conduct and interpretation of research results.
• To demonstrate the principles of academic honesty, integrity, and professional responsibility to your research work and that of others.?

Admission to the course

This course is only available for students at the following master programme:

International Community Health (master's two years)

Formal prerequisite knowledge

You must be admitted to the master programme in International Community Health and have completed all courses in the programme before or during the semester you submit your thesis.

Teaching

In the 3rd semester the students will collect data for their master's thesis through fieldwork. However, it is possible to write a master thesis based on an analysis of data previously collected by others or a meta-analysis based on literature studies.

The 4th semester is dedicated to analyzing data and editing the master's thesis. Lectures, which consist of workshops in analysis of quantitative as well as qualitative data. In addition, there are some general lectures on the topics:

• How to get started
• How to find the unexpected
• How to interpret your findings (data analysis)
• The use of software in coding and retrieving quantitative and qualitative data.
• How to write a scientific paper

The lectures start mid-January. In the event you are not able to be back, please contact your supervisor and study coordinator in December.

Examination

The exam consist of both your master's thesis and an oral examination.

Language of examination

You must submit your examination paper in English.

The oral exam is conducted in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
