INTHE4012 – International Health, Master Thesis
Schedule, syllabus and examination date
Course content
3rd semester
In the third semester the students will collect data for their master's thesis through fieldwork. However, it is possible to write a master thesis based on an analysis of data previously collected by others or a meta-analysis based on literature studies.
4th semester
The fourth semester is dedicated to analysing data and editing the master's thesis. Lectures are offered in analysis of quantitative as well as qualitative data. The topics are:
- How to get started
- How to find the unexpected
- How to interpret your findings (data analysis)
- The use of software in coding and retrieving quantitative and qualitative data.
- How to write a scientific paper
- Workshops within quantitative and qualitative methods
Learning outcome
You will learn how to develop a scientific thesis.
Admission
This course is only available for master students already admitted into the MPhil programme in International Community Health.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students who started the program in 2020 or later must have passed the following obligatory courses: INTHE4019, HELSEF4410, INTHE4020; INTHE4021, HELSEF4510, and either INTHE4022 or INTHE4023.
Students who started the program in 2017 - 2019 must have passed the following obligatory courses: INTHE4013, INTHE4014, INTHE4016, INTHE4017, INTHE4006, INTHE4007 and INTHE4008.
Student who started the program in 2016 or earlier must have passed the following obligatory courses: INTHE4000, INTHE4004, INTHE4006, INTHE4007 and INTHE4008.
In addition the student must have passed 15 credits of elective courses. Students who find elective courses outside the program they are interested in must get approval for the credits to be counted in the 15 credits of elective courses.
Teaching
4th semester; the lectures starts in mid January, so the student should prepare to be back in Oslo after field work by then.

Grading
The Board at the University of Oslo has decided to introduce detailed guidelines for all examinations, which take place at the University. The description of the grading should be clear and transparent. This is done to ensure alignment between learning outcomes, assignments, and grading. The Faculty of Medicine has developed a web page with information regarding exams and the grading procedures (norwegian version).
