Clinical Rotations

The class will be divided into two groups: Group K 1-45 and Group K101-145. Each student will be assigned a number.

Clinical small group teaching in Obs/Gyn and Paediatrics will take place in the respective departments at Ullev?l sykehus, Rikshospitalet and Akerhsus University hospitals.

Clinical small group teaching is mandatory.

The rules for absence of 20% and 30% also apply here.

Compensation for absence over and above the time allowed during the clinical rotation must be decided by the teaching department.

Clinical small group teaching begins in week three and is organized into two sections:

  • a seven week rotation in Obstetrics and Gynaecology

  • a six week rotation in Paediatrics
Additionally, each student must participate in a 4 hour "Introductory course" in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, and a 2 hour "Summary course" at the end of the rotation (refer to the tables below for more detailed information).

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Clinical rotation takes place at Rikshospitalet, Ullev?l University Hospital and Akershus University Hospital (AHUS), Departments of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. The students are divided into group K-1-53 and Group K-101-153. Group K-1-53 has its Obs/Gyn clinical rotation during the first half of the semester and then switch to Paediatrics; group K101-153 rotate the other way. Both groups are divided into 3 teams, one at Rikshospitalet, one at Ullev?l and one at Ahus.

Note the different times and locations in the schedule.

The class is divided in the following way: Rikshospitalet students K-1-12, 54, 55 and K-101-112, 154. Ullev?l students K-13-45, 56, 57 and K-113-145, 157 and Ahus students K-46-53 and K-146-153.

The Introductory Course, Summary Course, the Out Patient Clinics, Labour Ward and Gynaecology Ward sessions are ALL mandatory. Attendance is checked at the end of the semester using the Log Book. Every student should have a Log-Book where the mandatory teaching is signed for.

Introductory Courses I & II. - 2 hours each

Everyone attends (both teams):

Location: Kurssal B2.1009, Ferdighetssenteret (Skills Centre) 1st floor, section B, Rikshospitalet. Normal clothing.

Course I: Instruction in gynaecological examination and normal birth.

Course II: Introduction to antenatal handheld notes (helsekort for gravide), demonstration of forceps/vacuum cup and breech delivery.

Summary Course: - 2,5 hours

Organised at your rotation hospital.

Clinical Duty- 7 weeks

There should be maximum three students at each teaching unit.

Week 1.Gyn.avdeling: gynaecology ward / operating theatres / day surgery

Location: Rikshospitalet (one week), Ullev?l (one week) and Ahus (one week)

Teaching method: Clinical rounds, case discussions, gynaecological examination, assisting at operations

Week 2-3. Gyn. Poliklinikk (outpatient clinic) (two weeks)

Location: Rikshospitalet (two weeks), Ullev?l (two weeks), and Ahus (two weeks)

Teaching method: Clinical patient work

Week 4. Radiumhospitalet (one day)

Teaching method: Clinical rounds, case discussions, gynaecological examination in anaesthesia, assisting operations

Week 5-6. Forl?sning/barsel avd. (labour / maternity ward) (two weeks)

Location: Rikshospitalet, Ullev?l and Akershus University Hospital

Time: All students are invited to spend two full weeks (day and night) at the delivery ward. The students should divide the days between them. Three days each week are mandatory; you are required to assist at a minimum of three births and to have observed at least one caesarean section.

Teaching methods: Clinical rounds, assisting during labour, delivery and follow up on the maternity ward.

Week 7. F?de-poliklinikk antenatal outpatient clinic (one week)

Location: Rikshospitalet, Ullev?l and Ahus.

Time: Two to three days, there is a schedule for clinical duty at each hospital.

Teaching method: Clinical patient work.

Students have two mandatory days at the obstetric outpatient clinics. You have the possibility to add a day and this can be arranged with the head nurse of that department. The students must coordinate this amongst themselves to avoid overbooking.

Note: It is important to contact the outpatient clinics to make sure they have appointments with patients on the additional day.

F?deavdeling/barsel (labour/maternity ward)

The students attend the midwife’s morning report at 07:30 precisely at vaktrommet (Room nr. E2 4052) at f?deavdelingen on the 4th floor. Expect to be at the ward for a 24 hour period; remember that three days of each of the two weeks are mandatory. You are, of course, welcome to be there the whole week including the weekend. Kvinneklinikken has sleeping quarters for one student during clinical duty at f?deavd. Room # E3.3027, located on the 3rd floor at the at the E3-section (just by the ID-card office).

Clinical round with doctors on duty starts every day 08.30,Wednesday and Friday 09.00.

Clinical round with the lecturer Monday and Wednesday during your first week at labour ward focusing upon Leopold’s 4 manoeuvres, measurements of the Symphysis-Fundal height, and checking of the fetal heart rate with Pinard wooden stethoscope.

Gynekologisk avdeling (gynaecological department)

Attend at the meeting room (E2.3108B) on the 2nd floor at 08:00 (morning session).

F?de poliklinikk (Antenatal outpatient clinic)

Attend at poliklinikken on the 3rd floor 09:00 (PK UL) or 08:30 (PK0 og PK 4) Wednesday at 09.00.

F?de avd. /barsel (Labour/Maternity ward) 2 weeks

Students to meet on the 1st Monday at 08:15 on f?deavdelingen B, 3rd floor where the lecturer or a member of the teaching staff will meet you. You will be allocated to one of the 2 labour wards. The clinical duty lasts from Monday to Wednesday. The rest of the week including the weekend is optional. Students must organise the scheduling of the week so that no more than two students are on each ward at the same time. The ward has no sleeping quarters for students.

F?de poliklinikk (Antenatal Clinic) 1 week

Attend 08:45 Monday through Wednesday. You will be allocated to one of the 3 antenatal clinic rooms. One of these days should be spent with the ultrasound screening midwife and / or the Feto-Maternal Medicine ultrasound doctors. Due to the limited number of clinic rooms and occasionally large student groups it may be necessary for you to attend afternoon clinics or Thursday & Friday clinics

Gynekologisk avdeling (Gynaecology Ward) 1 week

Attend: Gyn. post, 6th floor at 08:45. You will be met by a member of the teaching staff.

Gynekologisk poliklinikk (Gynaecology Outpatient Clinic) 2 weeks

Attend at gyn-pol. 1st floor Monday through Wednesday 08:30 – 11:30. You will be met by a member of staff and allocated to a clinic room or the day surgery unit.

Gynavd I & II and F?deavd. I & II represent two weeks at each department (four weeks total).

Kvinneklinikken, Akershus universitetssykehus HF (KK Ahus)

You will be able to use one of the student rest rooms at NN6 as sleeping quarters if needed (see general information of Ahus).

Ask the secretary at the reception for the charts/patient notes for the day in order to study prior to the patient consultations. You are advised to arrive 10-15-minutes before the first appointment to do this. The clinical duty (Monday to Wednesday) can be divided between you as see fit.

Gynekologisk avdeling (gynaecology department)

Attend Monday at 08:00 at the morning session in the meeting room, N11, 11.floor (tlf. 67928817). After the meeting you will participate in the clinical round and examine patients on the Gynaecological ward S 11. There will also be opportunities to attend the operating theatre (Theatre 3, B6, 6. floor). You may divide the clinical duty (Monday to Wednesday) as you wish.

Gynekologisk poliklinikk (gynaecology outpatient clinic)

Attend Monday at 08:50 at gynekologisk poliklinikk, B3, 3.floor (tlf. 67928821). Ask the secretary at the reception for the day’s charts/patient notes in order to prepare yourself prior to the patient consultations. You are advised to arrive 10-15-minutes before the first appointment to do this. The day surgery unit (skiftestua) is located on the same floor. There you will be able to examine patients and learn how to take a smear test (cellepr?ve) while the patients are under anaesthesia. The clinical duty (Monday to Wednesday) can be divided between you as you see fit.

1. Attend at R?ntgenavd., Gyn. demonstrasjonsrom Tuesday , Wednesday or Thursday from 08:00.

2. Get white clothing at systua (Hus?konomen) at U2. Opening hours: 07:30-11:00 and 13:00-14:45 daily. Bring indoor shoes. Changing room at Radiumavdelingen (1st door to the left).

3. The students participate in regular round and examination. Assisting and observing in the operation room are possible.

4. The patients have the right to deny students to participate during examinations. For certain high risk patients the time under anaesthesia during an operation must be as short as possible, because of this students may not have the opportunity to participate.

5. The department makes an effort to have a designated doctor in charge of the students.

Paediatrics

The Paediatric inpatient clinical rotation takes place at Rikshospitalet and Ullev?l University Hospital and Akershus University Hospital, Departments of Paediatrics. The students are divided into K-1/K-100 (44 students) and K-101/K-200 (41). K-101/K-200 takes the Paediatric clinical rotation during the first half of the semester and then switches to Gynaecology and Obstetrics; K-1/K-100 rotates the other way around. Both teams are divided into two groups, one for Rikshospitalet and one for Ullev?l. Pay attention to the time and location details in the schedule: they vary!

Categories of clinical teaching

1. Clinical small group teaching on the wards.

2. Instruction in the out-patient clinics.

3. Teaching at health centres of Oslo and B?rum.

4. Independent self study in the paediatric units

5. Shadowing the doctor on call.

Further details will be given to students on arrival at Ullev?l or Rikshospitalet.

6. Emergency Paediatrics with a paediatrician in a primary care office setting.

All mandatory teaching must be signed for by the instructors in the signature booklet. A minimum of 80 % presence is required to participate in the written and oral examinations.

Rikshospitalet

Clinical small group teaching at Barneklinikken, Rikshospitalet

Bring: stethoscope, indoor shoes, white coat and white clothing, ID card and instruction material.

  • Paediatric Clinical Examination. Presentation of the Children’s Department (Barneklinikken), and an explanation of the clinical teaching in Barneklinikken followed by a demonstration of history taking and examination of a child. When and where: Meet in the entrance hall of Barneklinikken, see instructions in the schedule. Mandatory. Bring: White coat and indoor shoes!

  • Small group teaching on the wards (CW) (Lektorundervisning). Clinical teaching with an instructor in the paediatric department, four students to each group. The focus will be on history taking and examination of children of differing ages. Where and when: Meet at Room E2.2034 (Kollokvierom) Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 08:30. Mandatory.

  • Outpatient clinics (OC). Meet a professor at the outpatient ward for a 30 min morning session. The students should present patients from the previous day during this morning session. Thereafter the students will sit in with a doctor during consultations. Where and when: Meet on the first floor in the Outparient clinic. Meet outside university secretary, Venke Jenssen`s, room E1 1019, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 08:30. Mandatory.

  • Voksentoppen Center for asthma og allergy (VT). The students will be introduced to working with asthmatic and allergic children in a specialist national center. NB! Please do not to wear perfume. Where and when: Meet at Voksentoppen Tuesday and Wednesday at 8.15. Take the train, (Frognerseterbanen) to Voksenkollen station. Signs are posted to Voksentoppen - approx. 5 min walk. Address: Voksentoppen senter for astma og allergi, Ullveien 14. Mandatory.

  • Health Centre (HC) Look up the different times and location in the Helsestasjon information booklet. Mandatory. In the Skills lab at Rikshospitalet, practice examination of children prior to HC visit. Sign-up on the bulletin board. Not mandatory.

  • Independent self study (ISS). This learning method is based on participating in the normal work of the department. Attend the doctors’ morning meeting at 07:45 in room E2.2091. Thereafter you move on to the respective wards for the pre-ward round meeting, ward round (visitt) and also to take part in the daily work on the wards.

  • Shadow a doctor on call. Voluntary duty that offers authentic learning situations in the department. One evening during the semester. Important: In order for you to be more accessible during this duty you can collect the student-air call pager at the reception desk by the main entrance to Rikshospitalet. You must sign for the pager when you pick it up and return it to the same place after your duty. Where and when: Meet the doctor on call at the duty report: Post 2, 15:00. Sign-up on the bulletin board in the university secretary’s office. Not mandatory.

Ullev?l University Hospital

Clinical small group teaching at UUS

Bring: stethoscope, indoor shoes, ID card and instruction material. Change to white clothes before meeting.

  • Introduction day: Presentation of the Children’s department (Barnesenteret) and explanation of the clinical teaching. White coats and booklets for the paediatric rotation at Ullev?l hospital will be distributed.Where: Meet in the entrance hall of Barnesenteret as shown in the schedule. Mandatory.

  • Small group teaching:Teaching with an instructor in groups of two – three students. One week in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), one week on the wards and one week in the outpatient clinic.Where: The meeting room at the infection unit on the Ground floor (1.etasje), wear white clothes. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 08:30. We start the day with a meeting (30 minutes) where different paediatric topics will be discussed; you can ask questions and present some of your paediatric experiences from the day before. At 9:00 the different teachers will come to the meeting room and collect the students and take them round the department in small groups. Mandatory.

  • Health Centre (HC): Find the different times and locations in the Health Centre booklet. Mandatory.

  • Independent self study (ISS): The last two weeks at the children’s department, you are welcome to participate in the routine work of the department from the morning. A more detailed plan for this will be distributed later.

  • Duty in the Paediatric Emergency Room:Voluntary duty one afternoon, evening and night during the semester. One student follows the doctor on call. Here you have the opportunity to meet patients and parents, take a history and examine them (H&P). Where: Report to the Emergency Room at Barnesenteret (Mottaket), Ground floor at 16:00 (earlier if you can). See separate list.

Akershus university hospital

Clinical small group teaching at the Department of Pediatrics.

Bring: stethoscope, indoor shoes, ID card and instruction material. Change to white clothes before meeting.

  • Pediatric clinical examination. Presentation of the Department of Pediatrics (Barneavdelingen) and introduction to the clinical programme and education in clinical skills. Demonstration of history taking and examination of a child. When and where: February 1st (students K146-153) and April 12th (students K46-53). Time: 13h-15h. Meet outside Ekspedisjonen at Barneklinikken at the 4th floor (N5) Mandatory.

  • Small group instruction on the wards (CW) Teaching by the Professor given in groups of two students in the Department of Pediatrics. The focus will be on history taking and examination of children at various ages. Where and when: Meet outside Ekspedisjonen at Barneavdelingen at the 4th floor (N5) preferently when the doctors morning meeting starts at 08.00, however mandatory from 08.30. Mandatory.

  • Outpatient clinics (OC). Meet a professor at the outpatient ward for a 30-60 min morning session. Thereafter you will accompany a doctor during his/hers consultation. The morning session is meant to be student driven and the students should present the patients that they examined the previous day.Where and when: Meet outside Ekspedisjonen at Barneavdelingen at the 4th floor (N5) preferently when the doctors morning meeting starts at 08.00, however mandatory from 08.30. Mandatory.

  • Health center (HC): Look up the different times and locations in the Health Center (Helsestasjon) information booklet and at the bulletin board on the wall in the Meeting room at Barneavdelingen (N5). Mandatory.

  • Independent self study (ISS). This learning method is based on the students participation in the regular work of the department. You will be expected to attend the morning meeting at 08.00 in the meeting room at Barneavdelingen at the 4th floor (N5) at 08.00. Thereafter you will take part in the respective wards for the pre-round and round (visit) and take part in the daily work on the wards.Under guideance by the professor you are expected to take the initiative to contact patients and parents for medical historiy examination and also to physically examine patients on your own initiative. The specific patients will be discussed afterwards. Always contact the responsible nurse on the wards, and if possible your resident tutor, before approaching the patients/parents. Not mandatory.

  • Follow a doctor on call. Voluntary duty that offers authentic learning situations in the department. One evening during the semester. You may follow your tutor (ressident). Where and when: Meet the doctor on call for the shift report at N5, Ekspedisjonen at Barneavdelingen, 15:00. Sign-up on the bulletin board in the meeting room at N5. Each student will be provided by a tutor (resident) at Barneavdelingen. Not mandatory.
