Study groups

A discussion group, or a study group, is a student led group who meet throughout the semester to discuss topics relating to the curriculum.

To discuss the curriculum of a given course is a good way to acquire new knowledge in an effective manner. A study group often consists of between 2-6 students, who meet regularly throughout the semester, usually once a week. There is no given key on how a study group should organize one self, but we strongly recommend that the first meeting in the group is used for setting fellow intentions, clarifying expectations and organizing a schedule for the group.

Study groups are well equipped for:
  1. Understanding and discussing different perspectives in the course
  2. Allot the reading between the different members of the study group
  3. Promote student activities and responsibility for one own's learning
  4. Promote teamwork and dialogue between the students
Conditions for a well working study group:
  1. Dependence on students taking responsibility for the organisation of the group, as well as the carrying-out of the groups intentions
  2. All students in a study group are expected to contribute to the group's learning environment (no free-passengers)

Activities recommended for a study group

  • Solving weekly exercises provided by the professor
  • Unstructured discussions on the course's topics
  • Solving earlier exam's in the course
  • Semi-structured presentations on each weeks reading
