I was made aware of an embarrassing error in the solution note for exam Autumn 2007, problem 1, one of the |A|=0 cases, namely u=1. The conclusion is correct, but do not get confused by the error for this case.
(It has been available for eight semesters before anybody noticed :-o )
- I have promised to be available, but on the other hand I would like to catch a few of the lectures for the Haavelmo symposium Tuesday/Wednesday.

- Also, there are chances that Arne Str?m (room 1119) will be available (not before lunch), or Knut Syds?ter (not on Tuesday).
And, yet another lecture glitch: In the problem set, problem 2 alternative II, part (a) was about calculating the elasticity of y wrt. x, not the derivative y' which I wrote down.
The elasticity is xy'/y, so you add another line to my exposition by multiplying that answer by x/y.
This error did not affect the calculations for part (b), the elasticity of substitution.
I will try to be available next week (do not hesitate e-mailing!). However, Mathematics 3 has its exam on Monday, and requests from Mathematics 3 students will be given priority until then.
A few practical exam hints for Mathematics 2 and Mathematics 3:
- It is usually a good idea to start on a new sheet of paper for each problem (even for each letter point) -- then if you make any critical error, you can tear that sheet of paper apart (that prevents you from mixing ?good? and ?bad?) and start anew without having to copy too much text. Save a tree by skipping giftwrap on Xmas presents instead :-o
- Remember that the exam in this course is an open book exam, meaning that you are allowed to bring both your textbooks and any other printed or written material. Pocket calculators are also allowed (but no mobile phones, computers etc.).

Looks like I messed up whether the extra lecture was today or Wednesday. The obvious remedy is to give it both today and Wednesday.

More solutions are made available. As always I suggest that you try before you look up -- and if possible in a 3-hour format. If you want to make yourselves a ?trial exam? for a 3-hour format, then:
- do not open the Autumn 2010 set before you have 3 hours to do it;
- since Problem 3 of that exam was in part shown in class and in part is something they were probably better prepared for than you are, you can replace the entire problem 3. Replacement problems are given in the problem set linked to under the ?Weekly problems? heading (that link also includes the entire Autumn 2010 set).
- One of these problems are Spring 08 problem 1, so you might want to leave that one ?unseen? too.
Tomorrow's lecture will complete the ?nutshell? review, starting at integration. And the infamous giftcard will be drawn. (The Maths 3 prize went to my Master's student. Kolmogorov moves in mysterious ways.)

I was told that you would need more problems involving the calculation of derivatives of implicitely given functions. I am running a bit late on announcing problems, but you will get 63 and 92 from the compendium.
A note re your termpapers is published. I will copy a pile of them and bring to tomorrow's lecture together with your papers. The second half of the lecture will be spent reviewing the problem set.

Thursday 20th, seminar #2 is cancelled. You are advised to attend seminar #1 which will run as normal from 0815 to 1000.

Re Thursday's problem set: For exam 2009 problem 2, please add the conditions x≥0 and y≥0. Hint: you do not need to check the axes, as xy=0 there, and the point you will find will have xy>0.
Re Monday's lecture: I have already covered the intermediate value theorem. The content will be adjusted accordingly.
