ECON9300 – Advanced Macroeconomic Theory

Course content

This course has joint teaching with ECON5300 – Advanced Macroeconomic Theory

Macroeconomic theory with main emphasis on dynamic general equilibrium models. Mathematical tools for modern dynamic macroeconomics and examples of their application to business cycles, assset pricing, fiscal policy, growth and unemployment. Uncertainty in intertemporal models. The course is more about acquiring methodological and analytical skills than about empirical or policy applications.

Please note that the course ECON9300 is offered to PhD candidates at the Department of Economics.  Other candidates admitted to a PhD program may apply to take the course, but must be registered at the University of Oslo. 

Students at the Master's programme must use the code ECON5300.

Examination support material

Resources allowed: Open book examination where all printed and written resources, in addition to calculator, are allowed.

From spring 2018 there are two calculators allowed for examinations:

  • Aurora HC106 - a very simple calculator with most basic functionsfunctions
  • Casio FX-85EX which is a scientific calculator with 274

All other calculator types will be rejected. The calculators are checked in the exam room. There is no opportunity to lend the calculator of fellow students.
You can buy the calculators at Akademika bookstore at Blindern, or online.

The same general rules for cheating also apply when using calculator.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Students on phd-level are awarded either a passing or failing grade. The pass/fail scale is applied as a separate scale with only two possible results.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.

Other

This course prepares for the Ph.D. program. It provides a head start for last-year master students who intend to continue with a Ph.D.
