SOSANT9013 – Writing and method

Course content
The writing seminar is organised around the written texts that each of you submits. These texts are normally a chapter of your thesis. Moreover, each participant will also be asked to be a discussant for at least one of the other presenters. This entails reading and commenting critically on the paper with a view to structure and writing style, with a particular attention to the analytical thrust and the relation between theoretical perspectives and the ethnography.
Learning outcome
The aim is to develop your writing and argumentative skills, both with regard to your own work and in regard to your co-students. You get hands on experience in writing up an ethnographically based research piece. You also get experience in presenting your own research to a professional audience.

Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
You must be admitted to a PhD programme in Social Anthropology to enroll in this course. It is recommended that you take this course after you have finished your fieldwork.
Teaching
Eight seminar sessions followed by work in smaller groups.
The course is taught in English.
Access to teaching
The course may be taken several times, but candidates only receive credits for the first completion of the course.
Examination
To pass the course, candidates must attend the first seminar and minimum 4 of the remaining 7 seminars. All candidates must also hand in written work once during the course in order to pass. Instructions and dates for the hand-in will be given in the first seminar.

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

This course is the same as SOSANT9014. We use two course codes so that candidates enrolled in our PhD programme can get credits for completing the course twice.
