Course content
The Peace and Conflict Studies (PECOS) program provides opportunities for students to acquire practical work experience in the field of peace and conflict. The students are expected to assist with various tasks, but a main component should include performing analytic tasks (such as research assistance) to support their host institution. If you are unsure of the relevance of the tasks the institution can offer you, contact the PECOS study advisor.
The scope of the work must be equivalent to six weeks’ full-time study. One week full time study equals about the same as one week full time work (37,5 hours per week). The writing of the internship report should be included in these hours. The students shall receive no remuneration for the work. Your work may, but does not have to be linked to your work on the master’s thesis. Each student is only granted one internship.
Learning outcome
An internship gives you practical work experience in basic peace- and conflict-related projects and an enhanced understanding of how your largely theoretical competence acquired in your studies can be put to practical use.
Admission to the course
The course is restricted to students that are enrolled in the Peace and Conflict Studies programme.
PECOS has limited administrative capacity to initiate contact between interested students and relevant institutions. Students are therefore strongly advised themselves to explore internship options at relevant institutions. A contract between PECOS, the relevant institution and the individual student specifying each party’s rights and obligations during the internship is required. The student is responsible for ensuring that the contract is signed by all parts before he can start the internship.

The following administrative procedures apply to internships:
- The contact person at the relevant institution contacts the PECOS coordinator to express interest in drawing up an internship contract with PECOS and named student, specifying the tasks for which the intern would be employed.
- Two contracts are developed: One framework agreement between internship institution and PECOS and one agreement between internship institution and student. In the latter agreement, details about the nature of the work, the time period and other relevant matters are specified. While PECOS is not a direct party to the latter contract, we need a copy even of this contract for our files.
- To acquire student credits, the student must prepare a report, as detailed below under "Exam information".
- The student must register for the course PECOS4006 in Studentweb.

Teaching
The internship takes place throughout the semester.
Examination
Report.
After completing the internship you must compile a summary report of 5 single-spaced pages. This text must include a summary of the tasks performed during the internship and how these have helped you develop specific analytic or professional skills. It must also contain a discussion of how these experiences contribute to your professional development for a future career in the field of peace and conflict. Finally, the report must include an assessment of what analytical skills and professional perspectives the PECOS program has provided that were useful during your internship.
Language of examination
You submit your response in English.
