Course content

The design seminar is an integral part of the work with the master thesis. Research design and writing are central topics for this course. 
 
Through discussion of your own and others' master thesis projects, you will gain increased awareness of relevant aspects of conducting an independent scientific research: conceptualization and specification of your research question, choice of research design and research methodology as well as use of sources and data.

Admission

Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.

The course is restricted to students in the Peace and Conflict Studies programme. It's mandatory to attend this course for all students at the program.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

PECOS4022 – Applied Statistics for Peace and Conflict Studies 

Only students who have been assigned a supervisor can participate.

Teaching

Seminars.

Mandatory activities

  • Write and present outline of master's thesis.
  • Serve as a discussant on at least one other student's outline.

The number of seminars will depend on the number of students attending the course. We will devote 45 minutes to each student’s outline.

Absence from compulsory tuition activities

If you are ill or have another valid reason for being absent from compulsory tuition activities, your absence may be approved or the compulsory activity may be postponed.

Access to teaching

A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.

Examination

Presentation.

You must have completed all mandatory activities to pass the course.

Use of sources and citation

You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
