- He has a Ph.D. from the University of Oslo with a dissertation on Casuistry and Practical Ethics (1995), master’s degrees in theology from the Weston School of Theology, Mass., USA (M.Div.1982, Th.M.1984).
- Professor in Ethics, Faculty of Theology, UiO, since 2001.
- He was the department director of the Regional Committees for Medical and Health Research Ethics under the Faculty of Medicine, UiO (2009-2019).
- He was head of the secretariat for The National Committee for Medical and Health Research Ethics (1996-2009).
- Ruyter was a scholar of the Research Council of Norway at the newly created Centre for Medical Ethics at the Faculty of Medicine, UiO, from 1990 to 1994, including a year at the Center for Advanced Ethics, Georgetown University, USA.
