This week started with an exciting visit from Nepal and a good crowd in the large auditorium in Domus Medica for foa lecture with the ardent Dr. Ram KM Shrestha. Thank you to everyone who attended.

Foundation stone laying for the Life Science Building

This week, Dean of Research Jan Bj?lie and I will participate when the foundation stone for what will be Norway's largest university and hospital building is laid.

The Faculty of Medicine, together with the other faculties at the University of Oslo, was tasked with contributing to the contents of a casket that will be buried under the foundation wall. We have chosen to bury a model of a DNA molecule.

The model is a symbol of the importance of basic research for groundbreaking knowledge that has provided and allows for better understanding of disease, diagnostics and treatment.
The molecule has been inscribed as follows: "Kunnskap for fremtidens helse. Det medisinske fakultet 2023" ("Knowledge for the future of health. The Faculty of Medicine 2023”).

There are still some areas in the Life Science building that have not been allocated, and a process is underway to assess what opportunities exist to add new functionalities to the building in order to create new synergy.

New impetus in the study section

The faculty has appointed Hanne-Guro Winfeldt Aabelvik as the new Head of Section for Studies. She has been deputising for the past year and is doing an excellent job. The Deans of Studies and I have been on a study trip together with the newly appointed Head of Section and her staff to get to know each other and lay the foundation for good cooperation.

As announced in MED-nytt no. 6, Dean of Studies Magnus L?berg plans to create a programme to improve teaching at the faculty. Unfortunately, the scheduled input meeting for students and staff on 4 May had to be postponed as several simultaneous events were taking place that prevented both interested parties and speakers from participating. We will soon return with a new time and programme.

Vice Dean for Bachelor and Master Studies Eli Feiring writes in this issue of MED-nytt about the high number of applicants to our study programmes and is particularly proud of the response to our new master's programme in public health science and epidemiology.  She also reflects on the need for international orientation and knowledge exchange.
