Required specialization
Bachelor's degree
You must have a bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.
Required specialization and minimum grade requirement
You must have a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C in the required specialization. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B and a Second Class Upper in the British system. We do not use conversion tables for foreign grades. All foreign education is individually evaluated during the admission process.
Please note that eligible applicants who fulfill the minimum grade requirement will compete for a study place. Please see the section on ranking for more information on selection criteria.
Applicants must fulfill both of the following conditions:
- a specialization of at least 80 ECTS credits within Japanese language at BA-level
- 30 ECTS credits within East Asian and/or Japan area studies
In addition to 80 ECTS credits within Japanese language an extra full year of language studies in a native speakers’ enviroment is highly recommended before entering the master's programme. Students are recommended to consider courses that further their knowledge of Japanese beyond what is normal during a bachelor's degree. Students may contact the department for further information.
Native speakers of Japanese who can document near-native fluency in spoken and written Japanese through official transcripts from national secondary school may also apply on the following condition:
- a specialization corresponding to at least 80 ECTS credits in a relevant discipline, such as history, religious studies, literature, sociology, anthropology, political science, human geography etc.
Students who possess near-fluency in spoken and written Japanese and can document this through a JLPT level N1 or N2, may also apply on the following conditions:
- a specialization corresponding to at least 80 ECTS credits in a relevant discipline, such as history, religious studies, literature, sociology, anthropology, political science, human geography etc.
- 30 ECTS credits within East Asian and/or Japan area studies
