Required specialization

Bachelor's degree

You must have a bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.

Required specialization and minimum grade requirement

You must have a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C in the required specialization. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B and a Second Class Upper in the British system. We do not use conversion tables for foreign grades. All foreign education is individually evaluated during the admission process.

Please note that eligible applicants who fulfill the minimum grade requirement will compete for a study place. Please see the section on ranking for more information on selection criteria.

Required specialization for applicants starting the programme in 2021

Applicants to the master's degree programme in psychology must have a minimum of 80 credit points (ECTS) in psychology in their bachelor degree, consisting of:

  1. 10 ECTS from an introductory course on cognitive psychology/cognitive neuroscience/neuropsychology/biological psychology
  2. 30 ECTS from specialization courses in cognitive psychology/cognitive neuroscience/neuropsychology/biological psychology. Courses offered during the 1st year of the bachelor's degree are not sufficient. This requirement may include a bachelor thesis/project within the fields of cognitive psychology/cognitive neuroscience/neuropsychology/biological psychology.
  3. 20 ECTS from methodological courses (research methods and statistics), with a focus on quantitative psychological methods from university/higher educational level.
  4. 20 ECTS from a minimum of 2 of the 3 topics listed below. A topic must cover a minimum of 5 ECTS to be eligible:
    • Social Psychology
    • Personality Psychology
    • Developmental Psychology

Former required specialization (see above for new required specialization for applicants starting the programme in 2021):

You must have a minimum of 80 ECTS credits in psychology in your bachelor's degree, consisting of:

  • 20 ECTS Methodology (research methods and statistics):
    Knowledge and experience in quantitative and qualitative psychological method from university/higher educational level. It is a prerequisite for successful studies of our master programme that you have a good knowledge of and experience with the use of methods since this is a prerequisite for success in the writing of the master thesis.

  • A total of minimum 30 ECTS within 3 of the 4 areas listed below. Each area must have a minimum of 5 ECTS to be considered:
    • Social Psychology
    • Personality Psychology
    • Developmental Psychology
    • Cognitive Psychology
  • Specialization course in cognitive psychology/neuroscience of minimum 10 ECTS, at a higher level. Courses taken during the 1st year of the bachelor's degree are not included.

Selection is based on your academic performance in the required subjects for this programme.

Admission to this programme is usually highly competitive. Please note that even if you fulfill the minimum grade requirement, you are not guaranteed a study place in the programme.
