Learning outcomes

This programme will give you a good understanding of the importance of space systems and how they are used in the exploration of space. You will gain insight into navigation, communication, and earth observation.

After completing a master's degree in space systems, you will have achieved the following:

Knowledge

  • You have a good understanding of systems that operate in space, their applications, and their social significance.
  • You have a good understanding of how the environment in space and the launch situation affect the design, development, and testing of space systems.

  • You have in-depth knowledge within certain specialist areas, such as design, development, test, integration, and operation of satellites and satellite systems, and within certain applications of satellite systems.

  • You have specialist knowledge within the field of space systems obtained through work on a master's thesis.

Skills

  • You can carry out basic calculations of important parameters regarding space systems and their operation.
  • You know how to design small satellites and payloads.
  • You can describe the details in the design of individual subsystems such as propulsion, attitude control, thermal regulation, vibration analyses, energy storage, and energy generation.
  • You can analyze the reliability of systems and design systems with the desired lifetime.
  • You know and can plan the necessary tests that are carried out on space systems.
  • You can simulate and use laboratories to analyze relevant problems.
  • You can identify, define, present, and communicate problems within the field.
  • You can carry out an independent, limited research or development project under supervision and in line with current research ethics norms.
  • You are aware of quality assurance and risk analysis methods to ensure the system is working on the first attempt.
  • You know about the methods and processes for developing space systems.

General competency

With a master's degree in space systems, you will have learned to work independently and complete a larger scientific project. This means that you can

  • analyze a problem and set up a project to find ways of working towards a solution
  • read and evaluate scientific literature and consider your own scientific work in relation to this
  • work and complete a long term project by a set deadline
  • write scientific reports
  • communicate knowledge both orally and in writing
  • work well in interdisciplinary teams
