You retain your admission until:
- you choose to withdraw from the study programme.
- you complete the study programme.
- your right to study is revoked.
The admission may be revoked if:
1. you do not meet to the first semester
To retain your admission, you should for the first semester in the study programme do the following:
- pay the semester fee
- register as a student in Studentweb
- register for at least one course in your study programme
The deadline is 1 September if you start in the autumn semester and 1 February if you start in the spring semester.
If the study programme requires compulsory attendance at the start of studies, you should attend these activities in order to retain the admission, or have your absence approved. See also below on compulsory elements in the study programme.
If you are unable to begin your studies, you may apply for a postponed start of studies.
2. you are absent in a semester
To avoid being registered with absence in a semester, you should:
- pay the semester fee
- register as a student in Studentweb
- register for at least one course in your study programme

If you plan not to study in a semester, you should apply for leave of absence. You will not be registered as absent if you have been granted leave of absence.
3. you have used the maximum number of attempts in a compulsory course
Your admission may be revoked if you have used the maximum number of attempts in a compulsory course in the study programme without passing the examination.
4. your progression is too low
Most study programmes at UiO are full time studies with 60 credits per year. You may study less than full time without your admission being revoked, but you should at least have passed:
- 30 credits after one year
- 60 credits after two years
- 90 credits after three years
- 120 credits after four years
- 150 credits after five years
- 180 credits after six years
For five- and six-year study programmes and for study programmes containing courses larger than 30 credits, the provisions apply correspondingly. For example, the requirement for credits after three years may fall on a master's degree programme where the master's thesis amounts to more than 30 credits.
The study programme in medicine has its own provisions on progression. A programme student who is more than four semesters late in total in the study programme, will ordinarily have his or her admission revoked.
Approved leaves of absence and other approved extensions of the study period are taken into account when calculating progression.
If you are unable to meet the requirements regarding progression, you may apply for a reduced progression of studies.
Which courses are counted as part of the progression?
Only courses you have taken after you were admitted to the study programme are counted as part of the progression, and the courses must be included in the study programme. Education you took before you were admitted to the programme does not count, even if it is included in the study programme.
Education from institutions other than UiO does not count as part of the progression. If you are going to study at another institution, you should apply for leave of abcence. Exception: exchange studies via an UiO agreement.
Are you a student at the Honours programme?
To retain your admission, you should follow the ordinary study plan and take 70 credits per academic year. See information in the programme description of the Honours programme (in Norwegian only).
Compulsory elements in the study programme
Compulsory attendance at the start of studies
Some study programmes require compulsory attendance at information meeting, teaching or other activities at the start of studies. See 'Programme strucure' in the programme description for more informasjon.
Compulsory courses
Some study programmes have compulsory courses which should be passed in a certain order and at certain points in the study programme. See 'Programme strucure' in the programme description for more informasjon.
Required previous knowledge
Courses in a study programme may require previous knowledge. This means that you should pass one or more courses before you can continue on another course, or that you should pass certain courses before you continue your studies. See 'Programme strucure' in the programme description for more informasjon.
Planning the course of study
In the programme description, under 'Programme structure', you will most often find a recommended course of study. When you follow the recommended course of study, there should be no collisions between lectures and examination dates in compulsory courses.
If you do not follow the recommended course of study, you should make sure that schedules for teaching and examinations do not collide. In addition, you should be aware that some courses are only offered in the autumn or spring semester. You can ask for guidance from a student adviser or an information centre for planning your studies.
How is the admission revoked?
- Admission are revoked mainly twice a year, by mid-October in the autumn semester and by mid-March in the spring semester.
- You will receive a prior notice if you are about to have your admission revoked. You will have the opportunity to express your opinion within a specified period.
- If the admission is revoked, you will receive a letter to the digital mailbox or to the address you have registered in Studentweb.
- You will not normally receive an advance notice or a letter if the admission is revoked because you have not met to the first semester.
- If the admission is revoked because your progression is too low, it will not have consequences for the courses you are registered for in the semester in which the admission is revoked.
- You can appeal the decision to revoke the admission. UiO's central appeals committee is the appeal body in this type of case.
New admission
If your admission has been revoked, you can apply for new admission to the study programme in the usual way. The limitation in the number of examination attempts also applies to new admission to the same or another study programme where the course is included.
If you have obtained a master's degree or equivalent higher degree at UiO, you can ordinarily not be admitted to a master's programme or a master's study option within the same subject area (discipline) again.
