Ibsen's spectacular rise to European prominence in the course of just a couple of decades poses a challenge to theories of world literature. How did Ibsen himself perceive relations between centres and peripheries, between the great literary languages, and between a national and a more European orientation, and what can we learn from his case when trying to come to terms with the workings of the international literary system? ?
