MES4240 – Topics in Persian Studies II
Course content
This course focuses on central topics in Persian language and society. The topics are related to past or ongoing research in the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, such as; Persian literature; intellectual history; political Islam; and the language and content of Iranian media.
The specific topic of the course will be announced before the semester starts, and the course does not overlap with MES4240 – Topics in Persian Studies II
The course is based on reading, analysis, and discussion of selected texts in Persian and secondary literature in English. Training in methodology, team work, essay writing, and oral presentation is an integral part of the course.
Learning outcome
Participants will learn to read both primary and secondary texts extensively, and to use the texts in academic analysis. They will learn to discuss, produce, and present academic knowledge in oral and written forms.

- Classical Persian language and literature
- Modern Persian language and literature”
- Contending visions of the Islamic Republic: religion and politics in Persian language debates
Admission
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master's Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Teaching
The course presupposes active participation.
Compulsory tuition activities such as presentations and submission of assignments must be completed and submitted within the given deadlines, and approved by the teacher in order for you to sit the exam. Approved tuition activities are only valid for the current semester.
Examination
Term paper, to be submitted in Fronter. The term paper should be between 8-10 pages, not counting front page and references.

Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English.You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
