MCT4024 – Networked Music Performance Technologies 1
Course description
Course content
The aim of this course is to provides theoretical and practical knowledge on advanced audio-visual systems for online synchronous musical collaboration as well as for communication in hybrid settings. The students will learn to operate and maintain the physical-virtual Portal, a laboratory for network-based musical communication.
Learning outcome
Having completed the course, the student will:
- be familiar with tools for synchronous online musical collaboration.
- be familiar with the technical design of advanced audiovisual communication platforms.
- know about the theoretical and practical limitations of different audiovisual networking systems and possible workarounds for specific applications.
- be able to set up and use different types of technologies for physical-virtual communication, including audio/video equipment, networking technologies, and collaboration platforms.
- be able to arrange public events in the Portal with external partners, including pre-event communication, planning and testing, and technical assistance during the event.
- be able to document the technical setup and the practical running of audiovisual communication and collaboration.
Admission to the course
Students who are admitted to study programmes at UiO must each semester register which courses and exams they wish to sign up for in Studentweb.
Students enrolled in other Master`s Degree Programmes can, on application, be admitted to the course if this is cleared by their own study programme.

Recommended previous knowledge
It is recommended that the students have some experience in audio engineering and/or music technology.

- 5 credits overlap with MCT4022 – Physical-Virtual Communication and Music 2 (continued).
Teaching
The course uses a flipped classroom model and blended learning methods, and?includes:

Video lectures, readings and assignment in preparation for the workshops and lectures.

12 workshops of 4 hours.
Compulsory activities

Participation in 10 out of 12 lectures.

Planning and execution of two networked music performances.
Information about assignments and the deadlines are available in Canvas. Students have to hand in the assignments within the given deadline, and are responsible for familiarizing with the requirements for the compulsory activities.
The compulsory activities are only valid within the current semester. All compulsory activities must be approved in order to sit for the exam. Students are responsible to keep track of registered absences and check that everything has been approved.

Examination
Portfolio
The portfolio includes five group and individual assignments developed during the semester, such as blog posts, reflective reports, technical documentation and practical demonstrations.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
