MCT4025 – Networked Music Performance Technologies 2

Course content

This course provides further knowledge on advanced audio-visual systems, network-based musical communication, and hybrid communication settings. The students will gain practical experience designing networked music performances and experimenting with advanced multi-channel audio systems using state-of-the art technologies and practices. In addition, the students will develop pedagogical approaches, familiarize themselves with ethical and legal issues, and solve real-life problems related to modern music and communications technology.

Learning outcome

Having completed the course, the student will:

  • be familiar with strategies and technical solutions for physical-virtual communication for both musical and non-musical applications, and know how to integrate these in the Portal.
  • be able to critically reflect on implications of technology in human communication for both musical and non-musical applications, including ethical and legal problems in physical-virtual communication.
  • have developed pedagogical strategies for teaching others how to operate the technologies for networked music performances.
  • be able to systematically explore, evaluate and document different strategies for audio-visual communication and collaboration, focusing on both usability and functional aspects.
  • be able to integrate new audiovisual technologies in the Portal, including setting up equipment, troubleshooting, and documenting the setup.
  • have experience with loudspeaker arrays and spatial audio technologies.
  • be able to use the Portal in large-scale public events.

Teaching

The course uses a flipped classroom model and blended learning methods, and includes:

  • Video lectures, readings and assignment in preparation for the workshops and lectures.

  • 12 workshops of 4 hours?

Compulsory Activities

  • Participation in 10 out of 12 workshops.

  • Planning and execution of two networked music performances.

Information about assignments and the deadlines are available in Canvas. Students have to hand in the assignments within the given deadline, and are responsible for familiarizing themselves with the requirements for the compulsory activities.

The compulsory activities are only valid within the current semester. All compulsory activities must be approved in order to sit for the exam. Students are responsible to keep track of registered absences and check that everything has been approved.

Examination

  • Portfolio
    • The portfolio includes four group and individual works developed within the semester, such as video tutorials, blog posts, reflective reports, technical documentation and practical demonstrations.

You have to fulfill the requirements of the compulsory activities to sit the exam.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
