Learning outcome for master’s level (10 credits):

Knowledge

You gain advanced knowledge of the EU legal frameworks regulating Internet platforms and intermediary liability, especially under the EU Digital Services Act. In this context, you also gain an understanding of how intellectual property rights are relevant for intermediary liability.

You acquire good knowledge of the steering and management of core elements of Internet infrastructure, particularly data transmission protocols and the Domain Name System.

You gain advanced knowledge of the relevant regulatory roles played by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) and good knowledge of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), World-Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and International Telecommunications Union (ITU).

Good knowledge of the interaction of legal and non-legal processes in the drafting and enforcement of Internet policies, including knowledge of the respective roles and relative utility of respectively (i) contractual mechanisms and (ii) legislative and treaty-based mechanisms for Internet governance.

Skills

You learn how to discuss various modes of regulation of the Internet critically.

You will be able to elucidate the regulatory role played by Internet architecture itself and how various organizations develop technical standards for that architecture.

General competence

You gain an understanding of the technology, business models and standards that form the basis of the Internet.

You can collaborate with Internet governance experts from other fields, particularly in the context of Internet policymaking.

You can suggest and assess alternative forms of regulation to traditional law.
