Course content
The course in social pharmacy will provide knowledge about the Norwegian health care system and the pharmacists’ role within this. It will provide an overview of the use of medicines and challenges related to this, including clinical communication and ethics. The course will provide knowledge about the stakeholders in the field of pharmaceuticals and the associated legislation.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:
- you have knowledge about the history of pharmacy and role of pharmacists in the healthcare system in a local and global perspective.
- you have understanding of the terms adherence, concordance, patient safety,?health literacy, and patient's understanding of medicine use.
- you have gained basic knowledge about communication as a term and tool, and have skills in clinical communication with patients / customers.
- you have knowledge about health professional's ethics, and can reflect on professional ethical dilemmas.
- you have knowledge about terminology commonly used in health and?disease and social inequality in?societies and peoples, including the sami peoples rights and status as?indigenous peoples.
- you have knowledge of pharmaceutical terminology and?sources for consumption of pharmaceuticals?in Norway, and the stakeholders in the pharmaceutical market.
- you will have a basic knowledge of the structure and development of pharmaceutical legislation, as well as the main principles within the field of pharmaceuticals and health.
- you have knowledge about drug information sources and self-care, digital competence with insight into e-health, welfare technology and digital security, and can assist in the development?and use of suitable technology at both individual and system level.
Admission to the course
The course is only available to students enrolled at the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo.
Formal prerequisite knowledge
The admission requirements for the 5-year Master?s Programme in Pharmacy.
Health, safety and environment (HSE)
There are compulsory HSE courses at the beginning of the first semester. For students who start at the 5-year Master?s Programme in Pharmacy, the following HSE courses are required HMS0501 – Safety and Physical Environment, HMS0502 – Positive Learning Environment, HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety, HMS0506 – Patient Clinic Safety and HMS0507 – Fire Safety.
If you fail to pass the HSE-courses within the set deadlines you will not be allowed to continue the study programme until the courses are passed, i.e. the following year at the earliest.
Course exemption:
Laws and regulations describing the overall learning outcome regulate the Pharmacy programme.?Exemptions are only granted if all learning outcomes in the course are covered.
Exemption for FARM1120 – Social Pharmacy is not granted on the basis of passed exam in FRM1020 – Pharmacy and the society (discontinued).?

- 9 credits overlap with FRM1020 – Pharmacy and the society (discontinued).
Teaching
Lectures and active student involvement, including:
- 30 hours lectures
- 12 hours data-lab and pharmacy simulation-lab
- 14?hours of student workshops
- 46 hours other types of student active teaching - job shadowing
The following are compulsory and must be completed and approved before sitting the exam:
- 1 Job shadowing
- 2 reflection notes,?1 interview with user of medicines, 1 one-week adherence log
- 1 group based assigned project, including peer review and presentation of the project.
- 2-3 excursions
- Study-group attendance
- Pharmacy Simulation-lab
A minimum attendance of 80 % is required.?

In order to participate in job shadowing/excursions out in the clinic, it is a requirement that the HSE course HMS0506 – Patient Clinic Safety must be passed.
As?the?teaching involves laboratory and/or field work, you should consider taking out a separate travel and personal risk insurance.?Read about your insurance cover as a student.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Compulsory participation and approved assignments are valid for 3 years.
Examination
Final oral exam which counts 100 % towards finale grade.
This course has mandatory assignments that must be approved before you can sit the final?exam.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for the following course: FRM1020 – Pharmacy and the society (discontinued).

No examination support material is allowed.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
