IN1060 – Use Oriented Design

Course content
In this course, you will learn how understanding user needs provides a basis for design, and how prototypes and design suggestions can provide users with better basis for formulating their needs. You will plan and carry out a project where you will design and build a digital prototype for a selected user group. The project will be presented orally, in writing and through demonstrations. Emphasis is placed on appropriate choice and use of methods and techniques, collaboration in projects and evaluation of processes and results.
Learning outcome
After finishing IN1060, you?ll be able to :
- plan, implement and evaluate a design project that involves users
- plan and conduct multiple types of user context studies
- formulate design requirements based on own usage surveys
- collaborate with users on design proposals, prototypes and evaluation throughout the design process
- characterize and evaluate what and how the users have influenced in the design result

Special admission requirements
In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
- Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)

Formal prerequisite knowledge
The course presuppose IN1050 – Introduction to Design, Use, Interaction/INF1500 – Introduksjon til design, bruk, interaksjon (continued)
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with INF1510 – Bruksorientert design (continued).
Teaching
2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group exercises each week. The course contains a group assignment that is given a grade and must be passed to be allowed to take the exam. Examination
The exam consists of two submissions and an group presentation:
A report from the group project that presents the design process and the prototype
A presentation of the group?s product (group project): video
An individual written report
Grade calculation:
The report from the group work: a common grade (count 50%)
The presentation is considered passed/failed
Individual grade (count 50%)
Mandatory assignments must be approved prior to the exam. All part of the exam must be passed in the same semester.
It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:?INF1510 - Bruksorientert design (continued).
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.
Resit an examination
This course does not offer postponed or resit of examination.
