IN4270 – Digital Business Development

Course content

This course focuses on strategic and operational business development in technology-based companies. Through case discussions, theory exploration and interaction with companies the student will attain an understanding and appreciation of the challenges in managing high-tech organisations in rapidly developing technology environments.

Learning outcome

After taking?this course, the student will:

  • Understand how digital technology and innovation?changes business models and industry structures
  • Understand the challenges involved in formulating strategic change and adapting an organisation to external technological change, particularly disruptive change
  • Be able to analyse technology-rich and complicated business cases and recommend strategic initiatives, including?disruptive innovations and new?technology strategies
  • Be able to orally present and discuss key issues, such as?strategic options, obstacles to innovation,??data-driven decision making
  • Be familiar with critical reflection and thinking, developing technology?and strategic insight
  • Understand?the social, ethical and environmental implications of new technologies, particularly algorithmically driven business evolution

Students in the?Master`s program Informatics: Digital Economics and Leadership will prioritized.

It is recommended to have taken at least 30 credits in business courses prior to?this course, such as ECON1210 – Mikro?konomi 1/INEC1800, INEC1810 – Markets, Marketing and Product Development, INEC1820 – Organization and Management (continued)/IN1821, INEC1831 – Strategi

Teaching

A total of 4 hours of lectures, case discussions and/or?assignment training per week.

The course is structured as a combination of lectures, case discussions, in-class activities, possibly company visits. and computer-based simulation exercises. Students will form groups (2-3 participants) to produce a graded final term paper on a self-chosen topic and develop the paper during the course. Individual term paper writing is strongly discouraged.

80% active attendance?of the teachings is mandatory.? Active attendance means being present in the classroom,?having prepared the cases and articles for each class and being ready to discuss them.

Completion of active attendance is required in order to pass the course.

Examination

The course grade is based on the following assessments:

  • (50% of final grade) a term paper to be written in groups of two or three, on a self-chosen topic decided in collaboration with the course leader
  • (30% of final grade) smaller individual assignments (in writing or presentation)
  • (20% of final grade) a group assignment where students form groups of up to 6 students, creating a video presentation: 20%

In addition, 80% active attendance (see above) of the teachings is required?in order to pass the course.

All parts of the exam and the attendance must be passed, and passed?in the same semester, to pass the course.

Language of examination

The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F?is a fail. Read more about?the grading system.
