INF5050 – Protocols and routing in the internet

Course content

In this course you will meet distinguished speakers from industry and universities to give lectures on the following topics. The speakers may vary from year to year. Knowledge of WiFi, Router architecture, IP-routing, Big Data and Cloud solutions, Software Defined Networking (SDN), Unicast and Multicast, Quality of Service, Basic optical communication, Internet of Things, Protocols for multimedia applications, Cyber security.
 

Learning outcome

After completing INF5050 you have acquired:

?    knowledge about the new communication solutions, including optical and wireless networks
?    knowledge about high-end IP routers
?    knowledge of Big Data analytics and its applications
?    knowledge of software defined networking
?    knowledge about Internet of Things (IoT) and its vision to connect anything
?    understanding of cyber threats and advanced malware trying to control Internet
?    good connection between principles and their applications in industry
 

Admission

Prerequisites

Recommended previous knowledge

The course builds on INF3190 – Data communications (continued)/INF4190 – Data communications (discontinued)/IN270/INF240.

Overlapping courses

6 credits INF-PRI, 9 credits INF-PRI-F

Teaching

Seminar, 3 hours per week, spring. The two first hours is used for student presentations. The last hour is used to teach next week’s theme. Students are assigned to themes as soon as possible after course start.

Examination

One written part exam counting 20% and one oral exam counting 80% of the grade. All parts must be passed and all parts must be passed in the same semester.

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Explanations and appeals

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of your three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses: INF-PRI-F.
