TEK9520 – Cyber Security of Industrial Systems

Course content

The course gives you knowledge of "state-of-the-art" technology in sensor and mobile systems used in industrial communication; oil and gas, smart grids, industrial automation. Furthermore, the course is based on real-world challenges in the industry, such as protection against threats in sensor networks used in advanced metering infrastructure, and methods for protecting sensors and devices. The course will also touch on advanced security technologies for mobile communication systems, including security and privacy protection in near-field communications (NFC).

Learning outcome

After completion of the course, you will have achieved the following competence:

  • understanding of how key information security concepts and principles are addressed in industrial communication networks that include sensors and mobile systems
  • knowledge of relevant security standards in industrial networks, as well as mitigation techniques against security threats, intrusion detection and protection mechanisms, and security incidence monitoring and response methodologies
  • adaption of security standards for selected industrial scenarios
  • ability to discuss the applicability of security mechanisms in industrial networks
  • be able to explain the security challenges in a system of systems, where various communication technologies such as wirelessHART, Zigbee, Mobile Communication Networks such as 2G, 3G and 4G, WiMAX, WLAN/WiFi are used to communicate sensors and actuators at field level
  • analyzing skills in security incidences and possible mitigation techniques based on selected industrial areas such as smart grids, including industrial control systems

Admission to the course

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through?Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must?apply for a position as a visiting student?within a given deadline.

We recommend that you have knowledge corresponding to IN2120 – Information Security, TEK5500 – Security in distributed systems (discontinued) or?UNIK4190 – Informasjonsteori og feilkontroll (discontinued).

Teaching

The teaching includes?3 hours of lectures per week throughout the semester.

PhD candidates will be required to submit an essay and/or give a presentation to the rest of the group on a curriculum-related topic. The essay/presentation must be approved before the final exam.

Examination

  • A final oral exam counts 60% towards the final grade.
  • Two assignments or oral presentations?count 40% towards the final grade. These must be passed before you can sit the final exam.

In case of a large number of candidates, the final exam may be written?instead.
