Course content

The course will provide a comprehensive grounding in the subject of turbulence with emphasis on the theory of homogeneous turbulence. The course is equally useful for students working in the fields of computational and experimental fluid dynamics.

Learning outcome

After completion of the course, you will have the following competence

  • ability to apply the generalized representation of isotropic tensors
  • insight into the kinematics of homogeneous turbulence
  • insight into rapid distortion theory
  • insight into advanced modeling concepts

Admission to the course

PhD candidates from the University of Oslo should apply for classes and register for examinations through Studentweb.

If a course has limited intake capacity, priority will be given to PhD candidates who follow an individual education plan where this particular course is included. Some national researchers’ schools may have specific rules for ranking applicants for courses with limited intake capacity.

PhD candidates who have been admitted to another higher education institution must apply for a position as a visiting student within a given deadline.

UNIK9900 – Advanced Turbulence Modeling and Simulations (continued) / TEK9620 – Advanced Turbulence Modelling and Simulations (discontinued) or similar.

Teaching

3 hours of teaching every week throughout the semester.

The course has two mandatory exercises that must be approved in order to take the exam.

The course lectures is given at Department of Technology Systems in Kjeller Research Park. See the schedule for the student bus from Campus Blindern.

Examination

  • A project assignment counts 20% towards the final grade.
  • A final oral exam counts 80% towards the final grade.
  • In case of many students, there may be held a written final exam instead; this will still count 80% towards the final grade.
  • The course has a mandatory assignments that must be approved in order to take the final exam.

It will also be counted as 1 of the 3 attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for the following course:

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
