MEK4310 – Compressible Flow and Shock Waves
Course description
Course content
Sound waves, discontinuities, shock waves, subsonic, transsonic and supersonic flow, flow in pipes at large velocities, one-dimensional flow, hydraulic jump analogy, stationary shock waves, normal and skew shock, Prandtl-Meyer expansion.
Learning outcome
To provide an introduction to compressible flow and can be used for a master study in fluid mechanics or branches of physics or astrophysics.

Prerequisites
Recommended previous knowledge
MEK3230 – Fluid Mechanics/MEK4230 – Fluid Mechanics (discontinued), MEK3220 – Continuum Mechanics (discontinued)/MEK4220 – Continuum Mechanics (discontinued) and knowledge about elementary thermodynamics. It can be useful to have taken MEK4300 – Viscous Flow and Turbulence, MAT-INF1310 – Ordinary differential equations (discontinued) and INF-MAT3360 – Partial differential equations (discontinued).

Teaching
3 hours of lectures per week.
Examination
Depeding on the number of students, the exam will be either oral or written.
What form the exam will take will be announced by the teaching staff within October 15th for the autumn semester and March 15th for the spring semester.

Language of examination
Subjects taught in English will only offer the exam paper in English.
You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
Explanations and appeals
Resit an examination
Students who due to illness or other valid reason of absence were unable to sit for their final exams may apply for participation in deferred examinations. Deferred examinations are arranged either later in the same semester or early in the semester following the exam in question. Documentation of valid reasons for absence from the regular exam must be submitted upon application to participate in deferred examinations.
Students who have failed an exam, who withdraw during an exam, and students who wish to retake an exam to achieve a better grade may not participate in deferred exams, but may retake the exam when it is regularly scheduled.
