Course content

Gynaecology and Obstetrics, Paediatrics, Child Psychiatry, Pharmacology, Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Medical Genetics, Medical Ethics, Behavioural Sciences, Public Health, and General Practice.

Learning outcome

Upon completion of this module the student should have acquired basic theoretical knowledge and practical skills in paediatrics and in obstetrics and gynaecology. In addition, the student should also have theoretical knowledge about the most common pathological processes in obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics, and have acquired an understanding of the diagnostic processes, and growth and development from the time of birth to adolescence. The students should have acquired knowledge and skills in basic paediatric pharmacology and principles of drug treatment in clinical situations in gynaecology and obstetrics.

In the field of child psychiatry, the student should have acquired the skills and knowledge needed to understand and evaluate child psychiatric conditions. The student should understand diseases/illnesses among children and adolescents in light of the biopsychosocial model, and know the importance of good communication skills in encounters with patients and their parents. The students should gain insight into the ethical issues related to child care, gynaecological and obstetrical problems, and global diversity.

At the end of the module the student should be able to make use of medical genetic knowledge in clinical situations, and in counselling concerning family planning, pregnancy, the perinatal period, infancy, and childhood. The student should be aware of leading explanations for inequities in health on a global scale, and be able to identify dominant policies and suggest solutions. Upon completion of the course, the student should also see the relevance of global health knowledge for health practitioners working in an increasingly interconnected world.

MED4500R - module 5, Medicine

A programme student who fails an examination cannot progress to the next module until the examination has been passed. Students who resit or take a postponed examination may continue to attend their courses until the examination results are announced, or, if applicable, until the result of an appeal has been confirmed. The student cannot continue the course, but will be transferred to retake the class below, if a passing grade is not achieved.

If you have been absent from the study programme for two consecutive years or more, you may be required by the Faculty to repeat previously approved mandatory activities and/or exams.

Access to teaching

It is not possible to change groups once these are published. You will attend teaching with the group you have been assigned to throughout the module. The groups are published 7-10 days before the semester starts. Additional information is given in My Studies

Attendance is recorded using a signature book in which the student and teacher must sign for attendance each time. Registration takes place at the start of the teaching activity. To obtain approved attendance, students must attend the teaching on time. Students who are late cannot expect to register an approved attendance. It is the student's responsibility to obtain a signature from the teacher. The signature book must be submitted to the module coordinator no later than the Friday before the first exam. 

Students are expected to attend plenary sessions in person. Only students present in allocated rooms in Ahus and Campus South can attend streamed teaching.

Attendance requirements - Oslo

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Clinical small group teaching is mandatory. A total of 14 clinical small groups in obstetrics and gynaecology are held during this module: 5 times at the Labour Ward, 3 times at the Gynaecology Outpatient Clinic, 2 times at the Gynaecology Ward, 2 times at the Antenatal Outpatient Clinic, 1 time at the Gynaecology Outpatient Infertility Clinic and 1 time at Radiumhospitalet. The maximum permitted absence from mandatory small group teaching is 4 times.

Specification of requirements: During the time in the Labour Ward the student must assist 3 deliveries and observe 1 caesarean section.

The following courses are mandatory. The Introduction course, Reproductive Endocrinology & Infertility, and the Summary course. The maximum permitted absence from mandatory courses is 1 time.

Paediatrics

Clinical small group teaching is mandatory. A total of 10 clinical small groups in paediatrics are held during this module: 6 times at the Paediatric Ward, 3 times at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and 1 time at the Voksentoppen Center for Asthma and Allergy. The maximum permitted absence from mandatory small group teaching is 3 times.

The following 2 courses and the additional case meeting are mandatory: Introduction to Paediatrics and HLR course. Prior to the case meeting each student must complete 1 medical record, and the 3 other medical records must be completed before the announced deadline. Maximum permitted absence from the mandatory courses is 1 time.

Specification of requirements: All students must complete 4 medical records (see above).

Presentation of group assignment in Global Health is mandatory. Students will be divided into groups and assigned a topic. The group must give a presentation on the given topic to their fellow students. A first draft of the presentation must be sent to the group's supervisor for comments, and a final version approved by the supervisor prior to the seminar.  A short description of each student¡¯s contribution to the presentation must be enclosed with the revised presentation.

Attendance requirements - Campus South 

Unless otherwise specified, the requirements are similar for students at Campus South as for students in Oslo.

Obstetrics and Gynaecology

Clinical practice sessions are mandatory. A total of 13 sessions of clinical practice in obstetrics and gynaecology are held during this module. 2 sessions at the Gynaecology Outpatient Clinic, 1 session at the Abortion Outpatient Clinic and 1 at the Antenatal Outpatient Clinic. 5 sessions are held at the Labour Ward and 4 sessions at the Gynaecology Ward.

The maximum permitted absence from the Gynaecology and Labour Wards is 1 time in Kristiansand and 1 time in Arendal. The maximum permitted absence from the Outpatient Clinics is 2 times.

Additionally, there are 7 mandatory group sessions in obstetrics and gynaecology where the maximum permitted absence is 2 times.

Paediatrics

Clinical practice sessions are mandatory. A total of 10 sessions of clinical practice in paediatrics are held during this module. 4 sessions are at the Paediatric Ward, 2 sessions at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and 4 at the Paediatric Outpatient Clinic.

The maximum permitted absences from mandatory clinical practice sessions is 1 in Kristiansand and 1 in Arendal.

Additionally, there are 5 mandatory group sessions in paediatrics where the maximum permitted absence is 2 times.

Special teaching arrangements

All students will have teaching activities at Oslo University Hospital (Rikshospitalet/Ullev?l/Radiumhospitalet) and Akershus University Hospital (Ahus). All students at Campus South will have teaching activities in Kristiansand and Arendal. It is not possible to apply for exemption from this rule.

If the student meets the criteria for adapted teaching, adjustments regarding clinical small group teaching will be made, by placing the student in a group with the most optimal schedule possible.

Application including documentation must be presented no later than 1 May for Autumn semesters and 1 November for Spring semesters. 

Examination

Please observe that the attendance requirements must be fulfilled in order to sit for Module 6 examinations.

Two examinations are held during Module 6.

• A written examination in the subjects included in the module. Held as school examination with the examination system Inspera. Duration 4 hours. 
• An objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) in paediatrics, obstetrics/gynaecology, and pathology.

            - The three subjects will be assessed at 8 different stations. At each station, the candidates are assigned one or more tasks to be solved within 7 minutes. Candidates progress through the 8 stations in order to complete the circuit.

            - A pass for 6 of the 8 stations is required in order to pass the examination.

A pass for both the written examination and OSCE is required to pass Module 6 as a whole.

Resit examinations:

• Should a candidate fail the OSCE or their absence has been excused, he/she will be signed up for a SOE (Structured Oral Examination) covering all three subjects (Paediatrics, Gynaecology/Obstetrics and Pathology). The resit will take place before the start of the next module.
• Exchange students having failed the OSCE or having excused absence have the option of a resit in Oslo.
• Should a candidate fail the digital examination or their absence has been excused, he/she will be signed up for a resit of the same format as the ordinary examination, covering all subjects in the module. The resit will take place before the start of the next module.
• Exchange students having failed the digital examination or having excused absence have the option of a resit in Oslo. 
• Exchange students cannot proceed to module 7. Students who do not pass the two examinations in Module 6 cannot proceed to Module 7. Candidates awaiting results from the resit examination(s)/postponed examination(s) may follow the teaching in Module 7 until the results are known, or, if applicable, until the result of an appeal is obtained.

Grading

The Board at the University of Oslo has decided to introduce detailed guidelines for all examinations that take place at the University. The description of the grading should be clear and transparent. This is done to ensure alignment between learning outcomes, assignments, and grading. The Faculty of Medicine has developed a web page with information regarding exams and the grading procedures (Norwegian version).

Language of examination

The examinations (oral or written) will be held in English: answers can be given in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

The assessment of the module MED5600 consists of two examinations, weighted differently. The grading scale with letter grades A-F, where A is the best grade, E is the lowest passing grade, and F is fail, is employed for the overall module grade of MED5600.

Resit an examination

Illness at the time of examinations/postponed examinations

All students with a result of F or Fail will automatically be signed up for a new examination

Students who wish to retake an examination in order to improve their grade, are given the opportunity at the next regular examination. Students who wish to retake an examination must register using The online form (nettskjema). The deadline is 1 September for examinations taking place in the autumn semester and 1 February for examinations taking place in the spring semester. An exemption from the deadline may be granted when examination results from resit/postponed examinations are published at a later date. Students concerned will be informed.

Concerning regular students only:

The examination must be retaken within completion of the following module, according to the regulations. A MED5600 examination with a result of Pass (A-E) cannot be repeated once a pass has been achieved for MED5700.

Evaluation
