Course content
The course aims at providing students with practical knowledge and skill of processing and interpreting empirical data as related to students? research.
The course has the following components:
- data processing and analysis in quantitative, qualitative and/or mixed methods
- research reporting, thesis writing
Learning outcome
The three methodology courses in the programme (EDU4150, EDU4251 Part I and EDU4252 Part II) are designed to clearly reflect and follow the processes involved in planning, conducting, and reporting empirirical scientific research. By the end of the courses, students will be equipped with a complete and holistic understanding of social research at methodological, theoretical, and practical levels as applied to education.
This course builds on EDU4151 and EDU4252 and primarily aims at enhancing students capacity to:
- apply qualitative, quantitative, and/or mixed data analysis methods
- conduct literature reviews
- choose and apply theoretical frameworks
- write up research reports/theses
Admission

The course is a compulsory part of the Master Programme in Comparative and international Education.
All students in the 3rd semester of the programme who fulfill the requirements for the course have equal access to the course. Other applicants may be considered if there is capacity.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Students are required to have passed EDU4150, EDU4251 and EDU4252 in order to enter this course.

5 credits overlap with EDU4350 – Advanced Applied Course in Research Methods (discontinued)
Teaching
The course consists of lectures, seminars and workshops.
A minimum of 80% attendance is required of all students. If students do not fulfill the mandatory attendance requirements, they must submit a written request to apply for an additional assignment prior to passing the course. The application must document stated reasons for absence beyond the student’s control.
Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Examination
The students must write a compulsory paper. Requirements and deadlines will be annonunced at the beginning of the course.
If you fail the paper, you will have the possibility to rewrite the paper once.
Use of sources and citation
You should familiarize yourself with the rules that apply to the use of sources and citations. If you violate the rules, you may be suspected of cheating/attempted cheating.
Language of examination
The examination text is given in English, and you submit your response in English.

Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
