Course content

This course will also run in the autmn semester 2007

The course includes an introduction to the field of comparative and international education. Furthermore, the course consists of an introduction to the following areas: education and development; globalisation and education through a discussion of the issue of language in education; and educational policy and planning.

In addition a critical analysis of more comprehensive comparative studies, for example, PISA or TIMMS, will be presented. Finally, a comparative analysis between Norway and another countries educational system, with a focus on a specific area, will be dealt with.

Learning outcome

The course will give knowledge with reference to various theories and paradigms in the field of comparative and international education. Likewise, the course will provide an understanding of the possibilities and constraints of various comparative studies in providing a basis for policy decisions. Finally, the course will provide an insight into specific aspects of foreign educational systems.

Prerequisites

Formal prerequisite knowledge

No obligatory prerequisites beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway.

Teaching

Seminar and group work.

Active participation in the course is required.

Students will be offered academic supervision for course requirements.

Examination

Requirements: (obligatory components):

1. An individual written assignment of 5 pages dealing with a self-selected central topic chosen from the course syllabus.
2. A group assignment of 5 pages based on the course literature.
3. Oral and written presentation of the student¡¯s contribution in the group work.

The deadline for the course requirements will be announced at the start of the semester. All obligatory work is to be completed in the same term.

Exam:

All the course requirements are to be handed in within the given deadline.

Language of examination

The language of examination is english.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.

Withdrawal from an examination

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

Evaluation

The course is subject to continuous evaluation. At regular intervals we also ask students to participate in a more comprehensive evaluation.
