PED2130 – Children, Language and Text Comprehension

Course content

This course provides an overview of basic perspectives on communication.

The course aims to provide an introduction to children’s oral and written language development from pre-school to early teenage years, with a particular focus on minority children’s language.

Topics that will be raised include relations between development of oral and written language, socio-cultural sources of variation in development, relations between concepts and words, and children’s development and production of expanded forms of discourse and text.

Review and discussion of these topics is intended to lead to further discussion regarding the particular challenges that are related to facilitation in minority children’s learning situations.

Learning outcome

This course aims to enable students to analyse conditions for oral and written learning in children’s interactions with pedagogues and peers in pre-school/kindergarten and school, and to help them evaluate how such conditions can be facilitated.
The course is intended to develop the students' skills in critical evaluation of linguistic-pedagogical measures for minority children.
