SIE4200 – Special and Inclusive Education for Learners with Special Needs

Course content
SIE4200 is a component course in the second semester of the 16-month full-time Erasmus Mundus (EM) Master's programme in Special and Inclusive Education.
Areas of study include:
Planning, implementing and evaluating special and inclusive education related to:
? cognition, speech, language, reading and numeracy
? psycho-social conditions
? sensory functions
Learning outcome
Knowledge, understanding and skills related to:
- developing new knowledge and skills in the field of SIE for Learners with Special Needs through reflection and analyses
- reflecting and analysing the differences in Learners with Special Needs and contextual factors that can influence good inclusive practice in Norwegian, European and other international contexts
- identifying the need for innovations in the field of SIE and analysing how different theoretical innovation models will promote better practice for Inclusive Education for Learners with Special Needs
Admission
SIE4200 is offered at the University of Oslo from January to March every spring semester and is one of five compulsory courses in the joint Eramus Mundus Master's degree in Special and Inclusive Education (EMSIE) run jointly by the University of Roehampton (UK), the University of Oslo, (Norway) and Charles University (Czech Republic).
SIE4200 is a 15 ECTS course which is, in addition, open to international exchange students at master's level who wish to study Special and Inclusive Education together with Erasmus Mundus/other international students.
Prerequisites
Formal prerequisite knowledge
Erasmus Mundus programme students as determined by EMSIE joint admission requirements
International exchange students:
- A completed relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Special Needs Education or a related discipline from a recognised institution (considered comparable to a Norwegian Bachelor’s degree).
- Documented knowledge of English as required for international exchange students attending master's courses at UiO. Please see: English Language Requirements

Compulsory activity
Observation and assessment based on video recordings and/or school visits.
Teaching takes place during a three-month period every spring semester from the beginning of January to the end of March.
