SPED4203 – Evidence-based practice in speech and language pathology

Course content

Evidence-based practice (EBP) in speech language pathology is the integration of the clinician’s expert opinion, scientific and clinical evidence, and the client or caregiver’s perspectives.?

In this course, we discuss challenges, possibilities, and methodological considerations within speech and language EBP.

  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of methodological considerations when reading research??

  • make methodological and ethical considerations in assessment and interventions in speech and language pathology.??

  • critically appraise and report systematically on research literature?

  • critically appraise the transition between research and clinical practice within different work- and cultural settings in speech and language pathology.?

After completing the course, you should?be able to

  • disseminate principles of EBP in an interdisciplinary context?

Admission to the course

Admission to the Master’s programme in Special Needs Education or Master in Research in Special Needs Education. The course is compulsory for students on the specialisation Logopedi.

Teaching

The course consists of:

  • lectures

  • seminar:? journal club??

Obligatory activities:

There is one compulsory component with Comparative analysis of two research papers: podcast or video (work in groups up to four participants).

The compulsory component must be completed and approved before you are allowed to take the exam.

Examination

The examination consists of two parts:

1) Group: Video, podcast or live presentation based on given research question?

2) Individual oral exam to adjust/finalize individual grade after group work presentation?

The student has to receive a passing grade for their group presentation in order to sit for the oral examination.

Language of examination

You may write your examination paper in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail.

Resit an examination

Students who do not pass an exam may have a second attempt as soon as it is possible to arrange. This is called a re-sit examination. The re-sit examination is held within 3 months of the original examination.

Students who have passed their exam, but who wish to improve their grade may not participate in a re-sit examination. You may take an exam to improve your grades at the next time the course has an ordinary exam, as long as you have not already used all three attempts. The Department will provide information and guidelines about the re-sit examination.
