UV9200 – Introduction to Data Management
Course description
Course content
Course description:
This course focuses on common every-day tasks, operations, and practical problems an educational researcher might encounter when dealing with data. It will be discussed how planning and automation can reduce error-prone manual manipulations, and can ensure easy replication. Hence, proper data management is an essential element for good scientific practice.
A brief theory part will discuss the concept and types of educational data and the utility (and elements) of a data management plan when setting up and doing your research.
The larger hands-on part will focus on data cleaning strategies: including auditing procedures (i.e., detecting and handling inconsistencies and anomalies such as data entry errors) and restructuring (i.e., preparing data for efficient use in a specific statistical analysis or software).
This course combines lectures and computer practicals in R & SPSS. Knowledge and competences acquired in the course will be useful for quantitative research methodology and statistical analysis techniques in practice.
