UV9340 – New approaches to research on the teaching and learning of subjects

Course content

New technologies and more stringent requirements from scientific journals and other publication channels are forcing researchers in subject didactics to constantly rethink their research and to adopt new (combinations of) methods. In this course, we focus on recent developments in research methods in the teaching and learning of subjects. Among the topics that will be addressed are video analysis, triangulation/mixed methods, and new methods in writing research and quantitative analyses.

Learning outcome

The aim of the course is to provide insight into methods frequently used in current research on subject didactics and to discuss the opportunities and challenges that the different methodological approaches provide.

No obligatory prerequisties beyond the minimum requirements for entrance to higher education in Norway

Teaching

Duration: 12 hours, two days
The course is April 17-18, Room 231 Helga Engs hus

Examination

1 credit points for course participation (80% attendance required)
3 credit points for course participation and paper presentation

Participants will have the opportunity to present a paper on methodological challenges in their own work. Duration: 20 minutes talk with additional 10 minutes for discussion. Abstracts (200-400 words) should be sent to Eva Thue Vold (e.t.vold@ils.uio.no) no later than April 2.
