Course content
- Morphology within an integrated model of language and literacy development.
- Knowledge about designing programs of morphological instruction for students with reading difficulties and their normally achieving peers. What have we learned from research?
Among questions the course will address are the following:
- How is the acquisition of morphological knowledge related to phonological awareness, grammatical awareness, and semantic knowledge (vocabulary)?
- What do we learn from studies of different language systems about the relation of morphological knowledge and different areas of literacy (word reading, vocabulary, reading comprehension?
- What are major research questions about the role of morphology in literacy achievement that researchers still need to address?
- What do the results of meta-analyses and syntheses of morphology instruction tell us? Does morphological instruction contribute to morphological knowledge and literacy?
- What program design features need to be kept in mind – for example, morphological content, grouping for instruction, duration of instruction?
- Are there particular aspects of the Norwegian language and writing system that should be taken into account in designing instructional programs for students of different ages and abilities?

Examination
1 credit point for course participation (80 % attendance required).
3 credit points for course participation and submitted paper.
Submission of paper (8 – 10 pages): The deadline for submission is August 15, 2014. The paper shall be submitted electronically to research administrator camilla.rake@isp.uio.no.
