Programme structure
The programme encompasses 15 months (3 semesters) and gives 90 ECTS credits.

First semester, autumn: Maritime Law
During the first term the students will follow two courses in Maritime Law; JUS5401 Maritime Law: Contracts and JUS5402 Maritime Law: Liability & Insurance. The third course in this semester is a row of three specialist seminars on the topics "Safety at Sea", "EU Maritime Law and Policy" and "EU Transport policy and Shipping".
The whole semester is dedicated to give an extensive introduction to the legal rules applicable to shipping.
Second semester, spring: Mock trial and two elective courses
Mock trial
The first part of this semester is independent work associated with a mock trial on maritime law. The students will be divided into two teams that will represent parties in a law suit. Each team will receive coaching by a law firm. The teams will advise the parties on how to handle a conflict and later exchange pleadings within fixed time limits. Finally, the case is tried before an experienced arbitration tribunal in a public hearing.

The second part of this semester the students will follow lectures of two elective courses. The students can choose freely between the courses listed below:

JUS5420 – Forsikringsrett ("Insurance Law" – this course is only taught in Norwegian)
JUS5440 – EU Substantive Law
JUS5230 – International Commercial Law: contracts, applicable law and arbitration
JUS5260 – English Law of Contract (discontinued)
JUS5911 – International Climate Change Law
JUS5851 – International Investment Law & Arbitration
JUS5405 – Law of the Sea (discontinued)
In addition students can choose among these courses, but do notice that they are only given in the autumn semesters:
JUS5430 – Tilvirkningskontrakter (dynamisk kontraktsrett) (“Petroleum Law of Contract” – this course is only taught in Norwegian)
JUS5520 – International Environmental Law and Sustainability
JUS5850 – International Trade Law
JUS5310 – EU Competition Law
JUS5450 – Marine Insurance
As a general rule it is not permitted to take courses other than those listed above. In special circumstances it may be possible for a student to take different courses, but a formal application will have to be made in this respect. A decision will only be taken after the applicant has been accepted onto the programme. Acceptance onto the programme does not imply that other subjects have been automatically approved for study.
This is the complete list of courses offered in English at the Faculty of Law. Please note that there can be changes in the courses for spring 2012, and that the course codes is not completely up-dated yet, this is why some links to the elective courses are not working at the moment. Course codes starting with 5 are master level courses, courses starting with 1 are bachelor level courses.
Third semester, autumn: Master thesis
The thesis is an independent work, and the topic is of the student's own choice (but must have a connection to maritime law). Before starting the actual writing, the student will take part in seminars on thesis writing covering topics such as: how to outline the structure, how to best use the library, and how to engage in the writing process. A supervisor will be made available to each student.
Degree requirements
To be awarded the degree Master of Laws in Maritime Law the students have to; participate actively in the programme, pass the exams, obtain a passing grade on the written essays and the mock trial and obtain a passing grade on the master thesis.
