The Guild proposes EU moonshot-missions

The Guild of research intensive universities are actively seeking influence in the development of EUs Framework programme 9, and today we are proposing five research and innovation missions. These European ?moonshot?-missions represent one of the key changes suggested for FP9.

Guild mission proposals for the next EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation

The documents we are releasing today emerged from the work of researchers and other colleagues from across our network who submitted 40 mission proposals, the contributions of five Presidents who evaluated these proposals on behalf of the General Assembly, and further input from the Research and Innovation Policy Officers’ Group. Many colleagues across Europe contributed to this process.

The five missions cover a broad range of disciplines:

  1. Restoring the cultural authority of science
  2. Leaving a sustainable city in a sustainable landscape to our children
  3. Eradicating Europe’s digital divides
  4. Personalised prevention, precision medicine, and healthy ageing
  5. Take arms against anti-microbial resistance (AMR)

The Policy Paper on Missions welcome the Commission’s plans to adopt R&I missions that will address the Sustainable Development Goals from a European perspective, foster interdisciplinary research, and help articulate its impact more effectively. To ensure the success of the missions, we recommend that the approach will be guided by the following principles:

  • Missions should build on Europe’s research excellence and make long-term contributions to global challenges by providing more opportunities for collaborative research.
  • To achieve wide-ranging societal impact and address different societal concerns, the variety of missions should cover all disciplines.
  • Missions should integrate research-led education in their outreach and societal engagement.
