FARM3110 – Pharmacotherapy 2 and Physiology 3
Course description
Course content
The course will provide students with competence regarding the use of drugs in the fields of rheumatology, osteoporosis, neurology, psychiatry, pain, and sex hormones. In addition, the course will give the students competence in reproductive physiology, CNS physiology, CNS pharmacology, toxicology, developmental biology, and teratology.
Learning outcome
After completing the course
- you can describe pathogenesis, etiology and symptomatology of rheumatology, osteoporosis, pain, and selected?neurological and psychiatric diseases.
- you will have broad knowledge about CNS physiology and sex hormones function and therapy.
- you will have broad knowledge about the principles of the current drug therapy and understand the use of relevant drugs and dosage of these. In addition, you will know drugs with special requirements regarding dosage and use.
- you can identify benefits and potential problems related to simultaneous use of multiple drugs, and evaluate pharmacotherapy in relation to non-pharmacological treatment.
- you can identify likely adverse effects of drugs.
- you can provide relevant information about various drugs and correct use of these to?patients.
- you can communicate professional knowledge orally and communicate with other healthcare professionals.
Admission to the course
The course is only available to students enrolled at the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo.

- FARM1120 – Social Pharmacy
- FARM1130 – Pharmaceutically Based Organic Chemistry
- FARM1140 – Pharmacology, Physiology and Cell Biology 2
- FARM1150 – Pharmaceutical Based Biochemistry
- The compulsory HSE-courses HMS0501 – Safety and Physical Environment, HMS0502 – Positive Learning Environment, HMS0503 – Laboratory Safety, HMS0506 – Patient Clinic Safety and HMS0507 – Fire Safety required for students at the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy.
The compulsory parts of:
For students admitted to the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy until and including 2016 and who have been transferred from the old study plan, separate formal prerequisite knowledge apply. These are in professional compliance with the formal prerequisite knowledge that apply to the course, but may be replaced by courses from the old study plan, as well as transitional courses. Students on transitional arrangements may contact the study administration for a complete overview of the formal prerequisite knowledge required.
Course exemption:
Laws and regulations describing the overall learning outcome regulate the Pharmacy programme.?Exemptions are only granted if all learning outcomes in the course are covered.

Teaching
Lectures and elements involving student-active teaching methods, including problem-based learning (PBL) (compulsory); seminars (incl. flipped classroom); laboratory course (compulsory), and conversation?with patients.
- 30 hours lectures
- 18 hours PBL (6 PBL tasks) - compulsory
- 14 hours mini-lectures - compulsory with one mini-lecture per student
- 22 hours seminar/converstation with patients
- 2 hours laboratory course with submission of 1 laboratory report - compulsory
Compulsory participation and submissions in the course must be completed and approved before the exam. Approved PBL activities implies that the student has participated actively within the PBL group. The main purpose of PBL is to increase the student?s ability to communicate information about drug use to patients and to other health professionals.

Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Upon completion and approval of laboratory exercises and PBL teaching, this is valid for 3 years.
Examination
Final written exam which counts 100?% towards the final?grade.?
For admission to the exam the following must be approved:
- Approved participation in PBL teaching.
- Approved active participation in 2 laboratory courses and approved laboratory report.
- Held and passed a mini-lecture.
Withdrawal from an examination
It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you withdraw from the exam after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.
It will also be counted as one of the three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
Grading scale
Grades are awarded on a scale from A to F, where A is the best grade and F is a fail. Read more about the grading system.
