IN3100 – Information Technology and Society

Course content
This course is about the interaction between digital technology and other social and interpersonal relationships. You will learn how social conditions and social and individual preferences underlie the technological solutions that are developed and chosen.
Learning outcome
After finishing IN3100, you?ll:
- have insight into research and knowledge status in key areas that describe the connection between technology and community development
- have an understanding of how economic, political, social and cultural conditions form a framework for what technology is being developed and what solutions are chosen
- be able to describe, evaluate and imagine alternatives to existing schemes
- be able to use methods to conduct literature searches, utilize existing literature and collect data and use these as the basis for own analyzes
- be able to proved how your knowledge can work and translate into solutions that improve people?s everyday lives, provide a more well-functioning community and increase global justice and sustainability

Special admission requirements
In addition to fulfilling the?Higher Education Entrance Qualification, applicants have to meet the following special admission requirements:
- Mathematics R1 or Mathematics (S1+S2)
The special admission requirements may also be covered by equivalent studies from Norwegian upper secondary school or by other equivalent studies. Read more about?special admission requirements?(in Norwegian).
Recommended previous knowledge
The course is based on the interviewing techniques you learn in IN1050 – Introduction to Design, Use, Interaction and IN1060 – Use Oriented Design
Overlapping courses
- 10 credits overlap with INF3700 – Informasjonsteknologi og samfunn (continued).
Teaching
2 hours of lectures and 2 hours of group lectures each week. A mandatory assignment is required in the form of a written project report. The project report will be conducted as a group work. Attending at least 5 of the first 7 lectures is compulsory.
Examination
The exam consists of an oral presentation of the project. The oral presentation takes place as a group. There will be an individual assessment of the presentation.
Both the project report and the oral presentation must be passed in the same semester.
It will also be counted as one of?your three?attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:?INF3700 – Informasjonsteknologi og samfunn (continued)
