Sound and video in TSD

TSD does not take any responsibility for the misuse of the service, including the illegal recording of audio and video by unauthorized users who access the material.

Using the Nettskjema-dictaphone-app

Secure audio recordings with storage directly to the TSD project.

Read the Nettskjema-dictaphone-app user guide.

Using the Media Capture app

With the app, you can securely record data from camera, microphone, screen and speakers to your work area.

Access the Media Capture app.

Read the user guide for the Media Capture app.

Standard tools

The standard audio and video analysis tools must be ordered from TSD:

Contact tsd-drift@usit.uio.no if you want to use any of the software above.

Virtual machines

For more demanding tasks, we offer virtual machines with graphical acceleration through vGPU. Possible tasks include:

  • Video-analysis
  • Video-editing
  • 3D-modelling
  • 3D-animation

eVIR equipment and tools

The eVIR project uses virtual machines with vGPU for video analysis and editing. The GPU acceleration comes from NVIDIQA GRID K1 and can be distributed on several virtual machines depending on each user's needs.

The software eVIR uses consists of Adobe Premiere Pro for video editing and Mangold Interact for video analysis.

Work with demanding audio and video material

Some material must be converted before it can be used.

Videoediting with Handbrake

As long as the material contains at least one video file, you can use Handbrake for editing.

 Go to the Handbrake homepage.

Handbrake does not offer audio-only conversion. For this we offer the use of FFmpeg - see further down the page.

In Handbrake, you can use TSD's preset handbrake-720p-conversion-preset.json, which can be found in the \\tsd-evs\shared\evir folder (/tsd/shared/evir on Linux-based systems). Import the preset into Handbrake as follows:

  1. Open the media files you want to edit first.
  2. Find and click the Presets button in the top panel of buttons below the menu. The preset button in the menu itself only allows you to select presets that are already in Handbrake.
  3. Click Options, locate and select the preset file. It is then imported.

This preset is adapted to TSD and provides good quality for use in video analysis. Contact us if the quality is not sufficient for your project.

Handbrake also offers conversion of several files at a time.

Sound editing with FFmpeg

FFmpeg allows you to edit and convert video and audio. In TSD we offer software that allows you to convert most audio and video files to a playable format.

Contact us to get FFmpeg installed.

The FFmpeg homepage.

Known challenges

Poor video and audio quality may be due to the fact that the files from the cameras are optimized for archiving, not playback. The files should therefore be converted to a suitable format before starting analysis or transcription.

The size of the image affects the quality of playback, as your TSD desktop is streamed to your computer over the Internet.

The choice of video player also affects the playability of the files.

Windows programs do not load video files - NVivo, INTERACT

If you are not able to work with your audio and video files, it is probably because there is a lack of software - codecs - for the file format. Contact us so we can install the necessary software for programs like NVivo and windows Media Player to work.

If you have problems with VLC playback, this can not be solved by TSD.
