FARM5160 – Clinical Laboratory Medicine
Course description
Course content
This course explains the use of laboratory tests and how they are applied in diagnostics, classification and prognosis, selection of therapy, monitoring and follow up of diseases and drug treatment. The emphasis is on analysis of blood specimens, interpretation and implication of findings in the fields of medical biochemistry, clinical pharmacology and pharmacogenomics. Techniques within endoscopy and imaging will also be described.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:
- you will be able to explain the rationale behind blood tests and other laboratory investigations that are used to identify and describe disease in various organs and functions like kidney, liver, cardiovascular system, bone marrow, gastro-intestinal tractus, blood coagulation etc.
- you will be able to interpret results from blood tests and lab investigations that are relevant for pharmacotherapy including adverse effects etc.
- you will have a basic knowledge of endoscopy and imaging techniques like gastroscopy, ultrasound, X-ray, CT, MR and PET.
- you will be able to apply therapeutic drug monitoring and pharmacogenetics for personalized pharmacotherapy.
- you will be able to perform calculation of individual dosing based on renal function for drugs where this is relevant.
- you are able to contribute in the discussion in multidisciplinary teams and in patient records regarding blood tests and other laboratory investigations, specifically for the validation of adverse drug reactions.
Admission to the course
The course is mainly open to students who have been admitted to the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy at the Department?of Pharmacy, University of Oslo. In the event that space is available, other master`s level students may apply. Knowledge in relevant subject area corresponding to the content of Semester 1 through 7 at the department’s Master`s Programme in Pharmacy is required. Access to teaching
A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Compulsory participation and approved assignments are valid for 3 years.
The course may be cancelled if the number of enrolled students is low.
Examination
Final written exam which counts 100?% towards the final?grade.?
This course has compulsory exercises that must be approved before you can sit the final?exam.

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
