FARM5000 – Preparation course for master in pharmacy
Course description
Course content
The course consists of two main elements: ?A general part which include research ethics, philosophy of science, safety, research planning, keeping research records and other aspects of research in general and a module based part consisting of?practical exercises in topics relevant for the master thesis subject. The modules range from those including practical laboratory methods to other modules focusing on project based training in scientific writing and data analysis. The modules are chosen in collaboration with the supervisor. The course is compulsory for students who wish to take a Master’s degree at the Department of Pharmacy and is conducted in the same semester as the commencement of FARM5945 – Pharmacy. Master Thesis.
Learning outcome
After completing the course:
- you have acquired insight into research ethics, regulations for conducting research and basic knowledge about science philosophy.
- you can analyze and discuss ethical aspects concerning?pharmaceutical research.
- you can discuss the importance of scientific documentation and the difference between science and undocumented claims. You are also able to understand the basis for scientific authorship.
- you have knowledge about rules and regulations for scientific and personal data storage.
- you have theoretical insights and ability to plan and execute selected scientific methods central to your master thesis.
- you have skills in critical reading of scientific literature within the subject?of your thesis.
- you have the skills to write a scientific essay or lab report within the subject of your thesis.
Admission to the course
The course is only available to students enrolled at the Department of Pharmacy at the University of Oslo.
To enroll in the course, you must have been assigned a Master`s thesis at the Department of Pharmacy.

For students admitted to the 5-year Master`s Programme in Pharmacy until and including 2016 and who have been transferred from the old study plan, separate formal prerequisite knowledge apply. These are in professional compliance with the formal prerequisite knowledge that apply to the course, but may be replaced by courses from the old study plan, as well as transitional courses. Students on transitional arrangements may contact the study administration for a complete overview of the formal prerequisite knowledge required.
Course exemption:?Laws and regulations describing the overall learning outcome regulate the Pharmacy programme.?Exemptions are only granted if all learning outcomes in the course are covered.

Teaching
The course last 3 weeks in the beginning of the fall semester with a total workload of 120 hours (organized teaching and self-study). The general part is one week (40 hours teaching load) whereas the module based part is 2 weeks (80 hours teaching load). Course attendance is compulsory.
The course consists of lectures and student active learning. The module based teaching consist of laboratory exercises (sample preparation, chromatography, extraction, organic synthesis, spectroscopy etc.), project based training in scientific writing and data analysis (epidemiology, techniques for interviews, scientific literature). ?The modules are electables and choosen in collaboration with supervisor according to the topic of the master thesis, equivalent to 80 hours of training. Each module will include compulsory elements (laboratory journals, project reports, presentations).
Compulsory participation in the course must be completed and compulsory submissions must be approved to get the credits.?Read more about what applies in the event of absence from compulsory activities.

Access to teaching:?A student who has completed compulsory instruction and coursework and has had these approved, is not entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework. A student who has been admitted to a course, but who has not completed compulsory instruction and coursework or had these approved, is entitled to repeat that instruction and coursework, depending on available capacity.
Compulsory participation and approved assignments are valid for 1 year. If the student changes master`s project, the student must complete the elective modules relevant to the research area of the new master`s thesis.
Examination
Approved participation in compulsory teaching and approved compulsory submissions.
Participation in the compulsory teaching must be approved before the last compulsory submission.
Compulsory activities in the modules selected must be approved in order to pass the course.
It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course, if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:

The examination text is given in Norwegian. You may submit your response in Norwegian, Swedish or Danish.
