What do I need to host a meeting or lecture in Zoom?

Before you hold a meeting or lecture in Zoom for the first time, it is a good idea to try it out in a test meeting with a friend or colleague.

Equipment for a meeting or a lecture

At home or in the office

If you are going to hold a meeting or a lecture from home or from the office, you'll need:

  • A computer with Zoom installed. Make sure that you are logged in with your UiO account. For many, the simplest setup is a laptop (with camera) and headset with a microphone, but a desktop computer with a connected camera and headset / microphone is just as good.
  • Microphone and speaker (or headset with microphone)
  • Webcam – you can hold and participate in Zoom meetings without a camera, but especially in smaller meetings we often prefer to see the person we are talking to

Tips:

  • It is a good idea to have a headset/headphones because you hear better and are more undisturbed than if you use the computer speaker for sound.
  • You should have the headset with a microphone or other microphone close to you, because then the sound that reaches the others in the meeting will be better..
  • You should consider light and background. What do the other participants see of you and the room you are in? Do not sit right in front of a window, remove clutter and unwanted things and think about whether you need a light source that illuminates you in a comfortable way.
    • If you wish, you can use a UiO background in Zoom (guide in Norwegian only). Then the other participants do not see the room you are in, but only you in front of the selected background.

Hybrid teaching or recording/streaming from an auditorium

If you are going to have an event or a lecture in an auditorium that is prepared for it, it is especially important that you try the equipment well in advance of the event. There should be a user guide to the installed equipment in the room. If you encounter problems, contact support in the recommended way.

Test audio and video

If this is your first Zoom meeting, if you have new equipment or something has been connected to or disconnected from the machine you are using, you may want to test that audio and camera work.
